As some of ya'll may or may not recall, some of ya'll are obviously not old enough to recall, in 1958 there was a major confrontation between the Republic of China on Taiwan (Nationalist China) and the Peoples Republic of China (Red China) on the Mainland over the ownership and occupation of the Quemoy and Matsu Islands in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and Mainland China.

It was also an attempt by Mao Tse Tung to bring control of Taiwan back to Mainland China. Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek, leader of the Republic of China on Taiwan resisted.

There ensued both ground and aerial warfare for several months. I was a member of a U.S. Marine jet fighter squadron deployed to an ROC Air Force Base at PingTung Taiwan, backing Chiang Kai Shek.

I recieved an email today informing me that, after fifty years, I had been certified to recieve two medals issued by the Republic of China to veterans who participated in the operations. We who participated recieved certificates of appreciation from the Republic of China at the time, but I wasn't aware of the medals until a former Sergeant of mine emailed me a while back.

Guess I should be out celebrating, but it's bed time.

I was over in Korea. It wasn't even called a war until it was over. Lot of lives lost for not being a war. When we came back we were lucky the Army met us at the dock otherwise nobody would have known we were back.

I sincerely thank all of you for your appreciation!

The situation was, in the mid 20th Century, Mainland China wasn't the unified, cohesive country it is today. It was still fragmented into a loosely connected group of territories and nations without any strong central leadership. Think of the U.S. minus Washington DC. Mao Tse Tung emerged as a strong leader and pulled China together with the central leadership it needed.

Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek had established himself as leader of the Republic of China (Nationalist China) on Taiwan. One of Mao's regrets was that he was never able to override Chiang and bring Taiwan back under the control of Mainland China.

Nationalist China remains a separate entity on Taiwan to this day. As far as I know, the Quemoys and Matsus as still part of Nationalist China.

Goose,

Do you remember that Quemoy and Matsu were major political issues in the debates between Nixon and Kennedy in 1960? Nixon favored defense of the islands and Kennedy didn't. I've long since lost any awareness of their status.

Congratulations on the recognition and thank you for your service.

Goose, Get the medals you earned them. I think as you say there are a lot of people here that don't know what went on not too many years ago to our country, and the wars we were in, and the other countries we helped. I don't think they teach much about our countries war's in our schools. In 58 I didn't have much interest in what was going on in other countries, but ten years later in 68 I was stationed at a marine air base in Iwakuni Japan when the North Koreans captured the USS Pueblo. there were Jet fighters all over the place in a short notice. I figured they were getting to fight N Korea. Insted they let the Koreans keep out war ship, which they still have to this day, and we should get it back. Stan

Nancy: If you have time, and the inclination, I"d appreciate your recollections of Quemoy/Matsu, and how the politically correct have attempted to modify history (email, please).
Goose: While I thought then, and still do, that China was bungled badly, I"m glad that you and your people, and the rest of our people, got out in one piece.

My sincere apologies that it took so long for the government to recognize and commend your service. I'm not quite old enough to remember it as it happened, but I am aware of the conflict from history books (before the politically correct started changing them).
