I have an IH 1066 that I have been told by my mechanic that the TA needs to be replaced, however after reading some of the threads on this site I"m not so sure. The TA is fine on the low side and only slips on the high side it doesn't make any noise or anything it just slips. My understanding is that the high side of the TA is a direct drive with some sort of clutch that can be adjusted. Is this true? If so how do I adjust it. The TA on the tractor has been replaced a number of years ago, thats what I don't understand, why it would go out again, and so soon. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yep,

You've got 'er figured out. The 1066 uses a "Hi-Lo" hydraulically controled gear change to move between main drive and the T/A.

Get out your operator's manual and adjust the main clutch. If that doesn't help, sounds like ya needs a clutch 'cause it is slipping.

Main clutch problems show up on the hi side first because of the gear ratios involved. T/A problems "usually" show up on the lo side because of that darned sprague.

I snapped the TA on a 1086 once. Took awile to make it up a hill goin only 1mph with a gravity wagon! The TA snapped as i tried to put it in High, it was stuck in the middle of the two. So with that in neutral all the gears were pretty much the same speed. At one point i thought i was goin to have to call my buddy and have him tow me because i almost didnt make it up another hill.
