Did I do any damage to my Automatic Tranny?

My comute to work went from 8 miles to 48 miles so I had to buy a comuter car.

I'm very happy with my new Toyota Varis (new EPA rating of 35 MGP - have not had a chance to measure it myself).

Well, this is only the second automatic vehicle I have owned. Pulling onto the main road the other day, a neigbor on the corner was backing out onto the main road - I decided my most courteous move was to pull out and go behind him fast to get out of his way.

Well .... due to this little bit of distraction combined with the high whine of the engine, my brain on autopilot decided it was time to upshift - I pushed that little shift lever right into PARK before I knew what I was doing.

I realized what I did before I applied the gas again, but I had to roll a couple hundred feet before I could pull over and stop. It made a not-so-nice sounding clicking noise the whole time.

Everything seems fine (that was three days ago) including the hill-hold in PARK.

Am I in the clear or is there something in there I may have damage?

There is a bullet point shaped device that is spring loaded and when you shifted into park it applies spring pressure on the bullet. The bullet tries to push the back side of the parking pawl which has a lug on it that engages the parking gear and once in it will stop further rotational movement of the transmission output shaft and lock the rear whells. If you are rolling too fast or the output shaft is rotating too fast the bullet can't get in behind the parking pawl to push it into the parking gear. The result is that the spring loaded bullet and the parking pawl just oscillate back and forth until it slows down enough to engage the pawl firmly into the gear. It is designed to do that so nothing breaks. We tested then by driving the vehicles back and forth at speed to see if they would drop in premturely. It makes a lot of noise but does not cause damage.

Most automatics will just ratchet the park mechanism if you are at speed and put it in park, if park still works odds are you did no damage .

If the racheting mechanism fails and allows the parking pawl to engage the gear, believe me, the result is quite dramatic, and unmistakable. I think you're OK.
