Restoring my grandfathers tractor for him and found something in the barn for it. It is the char lynn hydromotor with the shafts. That is all that is there and no other parts. Can I plumb this into the hydroulic pump pictured below. Or do I have to find a belt drive power steering pump and plumb it up that way. Any thoughts would be great. third party image

The problem with doing it that way, if you use the tractor for cultivating for example, you get to the end of the rows, and want to lift or lower the cultivator at the same time you are turning - only one option will work, so you end up not getting what you need. Priority valves & such can help, but you put more & more money into it, and still is only a 3/4 good solution. Might want to hunt around for a belt driven pump and see how that prices out for you - will be better if you can afford it.

Have one on my Super 77, works well. Need to move the voltage regulator and get a bracket in by the pulleys to hold the pump.

That Char-Lynn unit is called a Torque Generator. It will not stand up to more than 1100 lbs of hyd pressure, or it will bust. Install a Tee on the pressure line leaving the hyd pump. Run one line to the orginal destination, and run the other to the torque generator. The line going to the torque generator will need a relife valve in it that is set at 1000 lbs MAX pressure. The outgoing line from the torque generator needs to be tied into the return line going back to the hyd oil holding tank. If you install it like this it will work great. Lots of guys have recently installed them on Farmall H's & M's. If you have any problems ask some of them. They have always been very helpful to me.

It appears the tractor and Charr-Lynn systems are both open center. To make the steering motor work with a T as if it was closed center. The open center system instead of running at free flow until a hydraulic function is valved in. The hydraulic system has to now be always under constant flow and at 1000psi pressure. This is going to heat the oil, use HP and extra fuel. A separate power steering pump with the Char-Lynn appears to be the best solution.

I am not sure of the tee in the line as mentioned in the above post, go to the Farmall Board and ask "Allan in NE" about the setup on his Farmall H.

He used a (priority valve???) in his setup to insure the power steering gets it supply of oil required before anything else does. He has some good pictures of it if needed.

I use the Behlen #201 Live Pumps on my tractors to supply the hyd oil for power steering. They are set to put out 3.25 gpm at 1000lbs of pressure. They mount between the dist or mag drive and the dist or mag now being used. If your tractor uses a dist or mag with a #2 flange coupling on it a Behlen pump may work for you.

There are two different kinds of #201 Pumps one is for clockwise rotation and the other is for counterclockwise.

Here ia a picture of one for a Farmall H or M:

One thing for sure from the above post is right about those steering motors either CharLynn or Behlen won't stand not much more than 1000lbs of hyd pressure, or they will bust apart.

I learned this the hard way and had to replace a steering motor.

The one on my 56 Cockshutt runs off a power steering pump. Very good unit you can steer it at idle with one finger setting dead still on hard ground.
