Sorry for the O/T but there are so many experts here with so much knowledge that I want to get opinions here before I take it to the dealer.

1992 Buick Lesabre with 3.8 liter
The speedometer reads consistently high
When going 85Km per hour the speedometer says 100 Km
The condition is consistent
I was told that it may be the Vehicle speed sensor.
I was also told that the Body Control Module may need calibrated
Any opinions??

HELLO Frankiee
I thing Bob is on the right track. The door jam should give you the diff. code .I think some one may have changed transmission or the differential. Look Under the vehicle you may be able to see new bolts or missing bolts from the component that was changed.

Good Luck..... Guido.

I'd live with it until everything else is perfect. But I',m not particular about that.

Your tires would have be WAY off in size to give you that much error. If you are reading 100 KMH and actually doing 85 KMH it goes something like this.

Your car probably came new with 205/70-15" tires or something close. They turn 792 revolutions per mile and your car is calibrated for that. Just check tire-size sticker on the door pillar and compare to what you are actually using.

To get the kind of error you are reporting JUST from the wrong tires - you'd have tires spinning 931 turns per mile instead of 792. That would be pretty hard to do and I think you'd notice if your tires are that small? A 185/60 - 14" tire almost gets you off by that much at 914 turns per mile.

Unless you took some 13" tires off a Subaru and bolted them onto your Buick - I think your problem is elsewhere.

Without knowing the vehicle repair history - I'd suspect the wrong trans. drive gears, vehicle speed sensor, axle gears, etc. If you owned it when it was OK, and it all-of-a-sudden got wacky - then you've got a better handle on this than we outsiders do.

One example is my Dodge W250 diesel truck. It had always been off since I got it used and read 65 MPH on the speedo when actually going 56 MPH. Odometer was off the same. Speedo is electric. I finally discovered the wrong speedo-drive gearbox. It was probably changed long before I owned the truck. I bought a new gearbox with the correct ratio for $50 and now it's fine. For $65, I could of used an electronic corrector instead.

Sorry I should have let you know that I just got the car. I do not know any repair history.
It has 205 70 15 which are factory spec.

Frankee you have different sized tires then the speedo was calibrated for. My guess is you have 15 inch wheels and were calibrated for 14 inch. Just a different gear for the transmission end of the speedo cable.

Does the transmission shift correctly?

The engine sort of jumps a bit when I step on it hard from a dead start. I think it is an engine mount. I have not looked in to it yet. I just got the car. It shifts great.
It has original size tires

If the tranny shifts correctly, that only leaves one other culprit.

I'd yank that cluster and send it in for repair/calibration.

How about different final drive ratios, if someone has swapped out the transaxle?

I've had to fix several (not Buicks). You can check with a GPS and/or measured mile-markers on a highway if you want to be sure.

For any cars or trucks with electric speedometers - it's an easy fix with an universal calibrator-box you plug in that is fully adjustable to calibrate the speed and odometer.

For cable-driven mechancial speedos - easy fix is a little converter gear box - which is often cheaper and easier than chaning the actuall speedometer drive gears.

Was the trans replaced recently? No on the sensor,no on the BCM(doesn't have one).

Although different 440's will fit in the car,the correct calibrated/geared trans is required to make speedo rear right.
