I have a simple question, how much Wheat is in a loaf of bread? How many loaves of bread can you make out of a bushel? If Exxon deserves some profit I think we do as well. I hear higher food blamed on high farm profits. Lets hear it what is everyones opinion on this.

What I read years ago was that you get 70 one pound loaves of bread out of one (60 pound) bushel of wheat, because of the ingredients you add. Divide the price per bushel by 70, and it gives you the pennies per one pound load. When wheat was $3.50...divide by 70, you get a nickels worth of wheat in a loaf. $14 wheat equals 20 cents per ONE pound loaf.

I saw a report last night about the record hi prices for wheat. The price was not stated in the report,so,how do they know it's a record? Also, the reporter said the farmers are selling the wheat to China. What a misleading load of crap that report was. It's the guy that buys the wheat from the farmer that is selling to China. But,anyone thats a half witt knows that.

Shore and the % formula works. I cut the salt in half, use honey in lieu of sugar and the relatives eat bread all winter. Come spring I have spend more time at the farm and only bake for me. No, I dont bake cakes or pies, that is my wifes job. She dont mind my bread making and soups and stews plus cleanup but the rest is hers. Its a good life. Spend lots of time Ice fishing. Have fun and eat bread.

How many pounds of wheat are in a bushel ?
Some of the previous figures seem high,50s 60s
70s 1 pounds loaves ? I know that you add some
stuff, yeast, sugar, liquid--but it appears
that some of you guys are getting more loaves
than there is wheat in a bushel.Consider also the
loss of bran in the milling.

A bushel of hard red wheat will make about 67 loaves of 16 oz bread. At $20 dollars a bushel for wheat should have $.30 worth of wheat in a loaf. not my thoughts found this on the internet david

Each American consumers, on average, 53 pounds of bread per year. Assuming a sandwich was eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it would take 168 days to eat the amount of bread produced from one bushel of wheat. A family of four could live for 10 years off the bread produced by one acre of wheat. One bushel of wheat will produce 73 one-pound loaves of bread. In 1997, Kansas's wheat farmers produced enough wheat to make 36.5 billion loaves of bread, or enough to provide each person on earth with 6 loaves of bread. Farmers receive approximately 5 cents (or less) from each loaf of bread sold.

I posted on this a while back and the number of loaves from a bushel of wheat varies greatly according to the type of bread you are making Here is a standard formula for a loaf of bread (white roundtop) Bakers figure their formulas in percentages so any size batch will be the same Flour %100 Water 65 Sugar 4 Shortening 6 Salt 1 1/2 Dough conditioners 2 Incl Yeast 2

All these amounts can vary especially the conditioner, Sugar and shortening . Water can vary for or five LBS depemding on the typpe of flour, the age of the flout and the age of the wheat berry when milled. Lets just figure the formula weight to be approximately %180

Now knock yourselves out figuring Also different loaves weigh differently.A one lb loaf would be scaled at the divider at 1# 3oz on average due to loss if moistre in the oven. Hope this helps H enry

If flour is 100% how would you have anything else in there? Your formula doesn"t make any sense.

I guess you didnt take time to read the whole thing. Try again. The total formula weight is 185% Now that has been that way for over 100 years that I know of. Try by replacing LBS for percentage. BUt with the percentage formaula you can figgure any size batch or in the case of continous processing can figure the rate of flow of any ingredient. Got it? Henry
