My middle brother Adam was down in Little Rock running a marathon today, and just after he crosses the finish line he collapsed. Doctors worked on him for about an hour but they were not able to revive him.

I don't know what else to say or do right now, I know you guys will all have me in your minds as I greave the loss of one of my brothers. My 2 oldest brothers are flying down to bring him home, but it still just doesn't seem real.

Don, deeply saddened to here of you loss. My older sister was killed back when I was 20 tears old and I didn't think I could live with it(she was murdered). I lost my sister, but my mother who had already lost her husband lost a child. If she could deal with it I guess I had to learn to also. I know these are dark days for you, and it's hard to look around and see people going about their lives like normal when your life has been shattered. It's tough. My prayers are with you and your family, and I can tell you that that with time you will slowly begin to get your life back again.

Donavan,

You and your family have my deepest sympathy. The loss of a child or young person could never be easy. May you find peace and comfort in His word during this difficult time. Strange thing is I went to Appleton Saturday and thought about seeing if you were at your folks place as we crossed over the highway to Kaukauna.

God Bless,
Bill from Manitowoc

Kaukauna native collapses, dies after marathon in Arkansas
Veteran runner graduated from Lawrence in '03
Staff and wire reports
A Kaukauna native collapsed and died Sunday after doing what he loved — running in a marathon.
Adam Nickel, 27, who currently lived in Madison and attended graduate school in pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died late Sunday morning after completing the 26.2-mile Little Rock Marathon in Little Rock, Ark.
He was pronounced dead near the finish line after completing the race in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
Emergency personnel tried to revive Nickel until an ambulance arrived with a defibrillator. He couldn't be revived and was pronounced dead.
Race director Gina Marchese-Pharis offered condolences and prayers to Nickel's family and friends on behalf of the Little Rock Marathon Committee.
Temperatures were in the high 50s during the start of the race and climbed to the mid-60s by late morning.
"He crossed the finish line, smiled and dropped," said Shirley Thiel of Black Creek, who described herself as a friend of the Nickel family.
"There was no indication that anything like this would ever happen," said Thiel, adding that Nickel had no health problems.
Nickel was a veteran distance runner, having logged top 25 finishes the last three years in the Community First Fox Cities Marathon. He was 22nd in the 2007 race. He finished in the top 3 percent of last year's Boston Marathon. He was preparing for a spring event in San Diego as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training as a tribute to his grandmother.
Adam was the third eldest of five sons of Cynthia and Ben Nickel, who operate a family farm at N169 State 55, Kaukauna.
He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1999, where he was active in many student organizations, did a lot of volunteer work and competed on the wrestling team. He posted a 25-12 record at 160 pounds during his senior year.
He graduated in 2003 from Lawrence University, where he was a four-year letterman in wrestling and also served as a student athletic trainer for the football team.
"Everybody who knew him loved him," said Thiel, describing Adam as "quiet, with a great sense of humor."
Thiel said it was too early to say what funeral arrangements will be made.

I know how you feel Don. I lost my brother 11 months ago tho he was 72. I also know God has his reasons when He takes a loved one home, and dying is just a matter of mind. As long anyone who ever knew him and remembers the good times he had here on earth, he will never really die.I figure my brother just took a vacation ahead of me,and is waiting on the other side.and if it's the last thing I do I plan on joining him there. My prayers is for God to comfort you and the rest of your family at this time

Don:
I have been missing you on the forum lately and hoping you would post. But this news is tragic. You have a very fine family. Words are inadequate. I cannot say I know what you are going through. I do know from some horrible experiences in my life, the Lord does give us extra peace and strength in these times.

Don, I do not live far from you. Please call me ANYTIME if I can support you in any way.

Donovan,

I am terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. We will be praying for you and your family during this difficult time and in the months to come. Lately I have been feeling like each day is an uncertainty, like tomorrow may hold something other than what I have planned. I guess each of us have to live each day like we don't know what tomorrow will hold. I trust you have wonderful memories of your brother.
If there is anything that my wife and I can do for you or your family, please let us know. Email is open.
