You guys that responded to that post below about valuations in Michigan, read my two responses. I've tried to answer your concerns. RayP,I wrote a letter to the Daily News explaining this too, should be in Monday or Tuesday. If you guys go to Board of Review, don't get out of line. We don't represent the township. In my case,I'm just there because I was stupid enough to answer the phone a dozen years ago when they called to ask if I'd do it. We're just there to hear your protest, hear the assessors side and act as judge and jury as to who's right. Pretty much,we just make sure there are no mistakes and that everything is EQUALIZED. That is,the assessor isn't singling anybody out for a personal grudge or anything.WE AREN'T ASSESSORS. That's not our job.We go to a class to learn what we can about assessing and what powers we have as a board, but we don't set these values. P!ssing us off with an attitude doesn't exactly put us on your side right off the bat,I'll tell you that much. But,read my responses, especially the one I just posted. RayP,watch the paper. Cut it out and give it to others. I hope it'll help clear things up and make everybody's life easier during board of review season.

Just got back from a talk to the township clerk
and the Chairman.
Yes you can, in Wisconsin, refuse to let the assessor on your land, or in your house, their
only recourse is to assess your property for
what they consider "fair Value". If, however,
you refuse admission, you can't go to the board
of revue and contest the assessment. By refusing
admission you have given up the right of disputing
the assessment.

I agree with GUN GURU.. here in Western Wisconsin
NEVER let an asseser into your home, as if they
even spot a new kitchen sink, they'll try to
raise your valuation. I don't know the legal
part of it though.. if you MUST let them in?
I'm going to ask the Township clerk.(Who I Trust)

Well, this ain't Wisconsin. I've gone out and looked to verify what the board was being told myself on ocassion. Like I said though,it's the boards job to find out who is telling the truth.

I read your last response to the taxes situation below. My value went down for both Taxable and assessed value.

2007 taxable value $147K 2008 taxable value $143k

2007 assessed value $151k 2008 assesesd value $143K Both went down. I understand now that you are not the grim reaper only a mediator between taxpayer and tax assessor.

I have been told that you should not allow a tax assessor in your home, because he or she may say Ohhh....this guy has hardwood floors, an extra 1/2 bathroom we didnt know about and 6 panel doors, we are going to sock him some more. I really have no respect for tax assessors, just like the IRS. (SCUM)

I see what happened. Your Taxable can't be more than your SEV. Must be you haven't owned this place very long for them to be that close together. With the ratio based on a two year rolling average, you'll be seeing your Taxable go down for at least a couple of years. As for letting the assessor in,go in and get a copy of your card. It'll tell you just what they have you down as having now. I've seen, more than once where folks are assessed for things they don't have. If that's the case, get whatever is wrong, removed.

I built my home in 1999 moved in 2000. Built the garage in late 2000 after I moved in the house. I know that the assessor has me down for 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, the regular stuff. built a deck in 2005 and he may or may not know about it.
