I have used Greased Lightning or 'Purple Power' for soaking carbs and carb parts with good results. They both contain sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) which I think was the main ingredient in the old Gunk carb cleaner. It had that 'special smell'though. Both of the above named products cut the guminess real good.

I got a big can of carb cleaner from Hedahls Auto Parts for around $4.00. It cleaned very well and is definetly worth the money. $50 is way too much.
