Heard NBC anchor person, Lester Holt, on last nights news make a comment about his tax money going to "millionaire farmers". I know my ancestors, who were farmers going back forever, would be glad to know one of their own had finally made the big time.

Wonder why my wife and I are still wondering where we are going to scrape up enough to finish paying our 2007 taxes?

Granted, you can easily have millions invested, but what's the bottom line? a nevative number perhaps? Wonder why Lester doesn't quit his NBC job and take up farming if it's so damned profitable?

Sorry for the rant.

Gene

Why are famers singled out as being welfare cases in the first place that need public assistance?Just like driving a truck or any other business those that can't make it farming need to find something else to do.

Finally after many years grain farming was very profitable in 2007 and will be even more profitable in 2008 unless bad weather hits nationwide.Unfortunately livestock farming isnt doing nearly as good.

Even with fastly rising input costs theres lots of money to be made with $4-5 corn,$12 plus beans, and $9-10 wheat.

In 2007 my corn made nearly 140 bushels per acre.I sold it off the combine at $3.35 per bushel and still cleared over $200 per acre profit. If I had stored it until now I could have cleared $450 per acre profit.Thats unheard of.

A freeze got my wheat but crop insurance saved me.31 bu beans at $8 allowed me to make $140 per acre profit.Storing them until now would have allowed me to make $300 per acre profit.

Its time to do away with government farm payments. They should only be reinstated if prices fall by half.

I used to work for a millionaire farmer, he owned
several farms, and I did field work as well as his
electrical work. Some days I would go in a barn at
6 am and he would already be there clip board in hand studying the cows Other days he would be on the
garbage truck going from farm to farm. I ran the
baler, and he and his boys would be on the wagons
or in the haymow unloading the wagons. Heck of a nice guy to work for. When I go back to Wi for a
visit he asks if I.m coming back to work, sure wish
I could

Another thing, he made sure the radios and the air conditioner worked in the tractors too.

Once I gave up trying to become a millionaire, life has been going a whole lot better. I go to bed with my belly full every night. House is warm. Nice pickup to drive. money to buy gas. I really don't know what else I need. My imediate family is healthy, warm and well fed. I thank my lucky stars everyday for such a good life. I sure don't have a million bucks but really don't need or want it. I'm guessing everyone on this board has enough to eat everyday. Right??

May not be the golden ticket for you and myself, but when I see posters on other forums trying to hide income so they don't pay $100K in taxes this year, life can't be too bad for many down-on-the-farm. The big equipment OEM's are sold out for 08 and worked real hard on 09, so again some are doing pretty good. Unless you had a drought or are a part-time/very small farmer you also should have made quite a few dollars. In this area there are a lot of millioniare farmers and those that weren't, had the last couple of years to get them well on the way towards that goal. Some chose to be farmers and need to get dirty and sweat a little, others such as Lester Holt, are blessed with a "pretty face" and good speaking ability and can make money without much physical effort.

I hope you're being tongue in cheek Gene. But I think what what he's talking about are the folks like CBS anchor Sam Donaldson, who was collecting subsidies for his ranch in Arizona or the ones that live on Park Avenue and collect subsidies just because they own a farm. I can see the administrations side of this in putting caps on subsidies, and I see Farm Bureaus side too. The administration says we are paying them to farmers, the Farm Bureau says no,we're subsidizing commodities and that the first bushel produced is no different than the last,no matter who produces it. Kinda hard to nail down just who's right.

These news people just rock my world, even though I watch these so called debates I sure need them to tell me what I just had seen! They too along with our political figures should not be allowed to transport on airplanes, but instead ride busses so they can truely see, and heaven forbid talk to the american public.
