I have 1955 gas 801 with 12 volt system I need to know if is it neg or pos ground?

Well I'll fill in a few things for you. 800 was made from 1955-1957 and the 801 1958-1962. So then what is yours since it can't be what you said. Not as far as the ground when new it would have been 6 volts and + ground but most 12 volt conversions use an alternator and then they are switch to - ground

Unless it is an 801 diesel and then it is 12v

Alternator or generator?

Alternator - Negative Ground
Generator - could be either
