I wanted to order a replacement ammeter on my MF 165 and did not find an exact match which leads me to a few questions. Why are there three terminals on the back of the meter? It's not lighted and the ones I have seen before only had two large post. Will any similar ammeter from ytmag.com work? Do they all have three terminals?
(two large post and a male spade). I was looking at the wiring diagram and the wire to the male spade daisy chains to the other guages then to an inverter that the tractor lights are wired to.
Why the inverter? Wont the lights work on DCV?
I'll thank you for any information. Truely Dan Fagan.

Here ya go on the schematic, from Big Dean:

After just completing a omplete rewire of my 175, I"ve gotten to know this thing pretty good...

Thanks for the diagrams Big Dean. Since I don't need lighted guages, I should be able to replace my old ammeter with any of the 2" ammeters on ytmag, like the AMG60 John Deere 2" guage, right?

Whoa, thanks for all the good info. I feel like part of the family now. MF Poor I"ll take your word about the lighted gauges, it only makes sense. However I opened up the old ammeter and found no semblance of bulb of any kind, only the normal ammeter guts. I don"t need a lighted guage so any 2" ammeter should be ok, like part# AMG60 right?

The gauges were lighted at one point. That inverter (listed in MF parts manuals as a "power supply") powered a 110v backlight in the gauges. If you buy a replacement gauge from Massey now, you get a 12v bulb/socket arraingment that you simply wire in to the lighting circuit. That "little black box" inverter hasn't been available for some time.

Don't know why I typed 110v (from the inverter) it IS alternating current but I'm not sure of voltage.

Trying to find more info on the old lighting. I have wiring schematics but no scanner. MF service manual refers to old gauge lighting as "neon".

You might have some luck finding a good used inverter/gauges with a tractor salvage yard. The gauge lights still work on my '71 MF150. Fuel gauge went belly up a few years ago. I found a NOS gauge at a local dealer. I won't admit to what I had to pay for it

Post a pic of the 'inverter' / schematic.. I'd have to see that to believe it...

Tubes were still big in use whan that tractor was invented...

Like I say.. I'd be interested in seeing the schematic... autotransforemer'd or not.. etc.

Soundguy, I have the diagram for the MF 165 with the inverter labeled, but it doesn't go into detail about the inverter. I don't know if that's what you were talking about. If you want it I can fax it or email it. Let me know.

If you can email it I'd love to see it... besides.. having another schematic to add to my collection would be nice..

if it's any trouble don't worry about it.

thanks

Vibrators with a transformer were also used to generate high voltage in auto radios.
