Jack a said: (quoted from post at 23:36:35 02/21/08) Actually you are supposed to fly another countries flag at the same height as the American Flag.

When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace. 8)

Some messages disappeared here the last day or two regarding your subject, including-- Google "proper display of US flag."

I am in agreement that if not done properly, don't do it. I have a tendency to get real riled up about flag etiquette. For instance (no company flag is to be flown on the same pole as the United States Flag). Check out your nearest Tyson Foods facility next trip past. If you got $$$ rules don't apply. Balderdash!

On appropriate days: 9/11, 7/4, Memorial Day.

I don't fly it every day because I don't have the time or facilities to do it properly. Just hanging a flag off a stick and leaving it at that is NOT how it's done. Flags flown at night are supposed to be lighted. I don't have time to raise it in the morning and take it down at sundown, and if I can't do it right, I won't do it.

In fact, I've been known to take strangers to task for improper display/care of flags.

Obnoxious I know, but it's one of my hot buttons, and I spent 22 years serving that flag.

I put mine up on 9/11 right after the towers fell then I turn my porch light on at night.
I will take it down and put it away hen UBL is dead.
then I will get a new one and fly it from a pole in the yard.
Walt

Yep.. reminds me of a joke I heard... Osama goes to a fortune teller to find out when he will die. Fortune teller tells him he will die on a US holiday. Osama asks what day / holiday it is. Fortune teller tells him it doesn't matter what day it is.. whatever day he dies will be a US holiday!

I"d recognize the second one anywhere- All-American 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC. Spent some time down the road on Smoke Bomb Hill in the SF training area in 1965.

Spring, summer and fall I fly it. Once the winter winds start it rips the flag to pieces and bend my flag pole!

We display small flags at the corners of our fence and gate posts at our place in town.

While at the farm last 4th of July, I was watching the evening news and several parades were being telecast.

Got inspired by the parades, got out the large flag, stuck it in the umbrella holder on the 48A and had my own "one tractor" parade.

Several of the neighbors heard the tractor comimg, especially downhill, when the popping became backfiring.

Kids loved it and ran across yards and down the right-of-way along the road yelling and waving.

Started several stampedes of both cattle and horses, dogs barking, cats climbing trees, chickens running around in the yard...

Priceless!

I definitely fly the flag and do it properly. I received my flag and pole for a Father's Day gift years ago and it is definitely my favorite gift ever. I may not agree with everything our nation does but am still very proud of its heritage.
