Just want to hear what you all think. Just heard on the radio, WOC, 1420 am, Davenport, Ia. that the Iowa House passed a bill to ban smoking in tractors and combines in Iowa and sent it to the Senate. Farm Bureau tried to get agriculture exempted from bill but house said no. How many more freedoms are people going to let the laberals take away? I heard that if you go to jail in NYC, and are overweight, they put you on a strict diet to make you loose weight. BUT, if you want to go to a casino, you can smoke away. Hope you all are proud of the people you elected. I live in Ill,we ain't much better. Chris

While it may soon be illegal for a farmer to smoke out in the middle of a 100 acre plot while plowing (without a soul around), there is a saving grace.

After he is done plowing he can go to the cassino (I had to spell it wrong because the silly filters on this site would not let me use the word) and smoke in a public place with thousands of people in a confined space, where the exits are hidden from view.

Makes all the sense??

God forbid if Iowa banned smoking in a cassino as they get 4% of their budget from the profits of the casinos.

Is it freedom or money that determines our laws?

In the words of Jessie "The Body" Ventura . "Democracy is great in the USA, we get one more choice then Communism."

As much as I hate cigarette smoke and never got started myself, telling someone they can't smoke in their vehicle or farm equipment is beyond ludicrous. I do agree that smoking areas should be away from entrances or exits. I had no choice but to walk through that cloud of stinking cigarette smoke to get into my building.

I just think it is hilarious that all you anti-dem are pointing out how they try to take your personal freedom away on smoking and yet here we have a sitting pres who wants to read all your info and what you do on the tubes and who you call and wants amnesty for the companies who helped him break the law in the name of "war on terror to protect americans". not much heard about that.or any of the other freedoms he has taken away. guess it just seems to be where it hits you.
at the same time if it is (smoking) such a bad thing and does so much harm ,why are they still allowed to sell them?

a diet in jail? well if the person committing the crime was aware that would happen maybe he or she would not do what got them there. I have seen a few people go to prison and come out FAT and thought punishment must have been good to him but my thought is why feed them better than the military they get the M.R.E's on their training and a balanced diet and are required to maintain a fit body so why should prison be better than that diet sounds good to me for criminals.

I don't smoke but the legislators shouldn't get involved in personal legal habits unless it involves other people having to breath it. When other people ride with me they have to wait till the trip is over to have a smoke

Interesting take on the issue in MN turned up recently, now a local bar owner is going to do the same thing. MN law allows smoking in a theatrical production- so on Saturday, there will be a production, put on by "actors", at a local bar. Sounds like all patrons will be participants in the "play".

While I can understand a ban on smoking in a public place; what you do in your own tractor on your own land is your bussiness.

Much like Calif started doing a few years back. They passed a law saying you could not smoke within 50 ft of a goverment building.
So the DOT was writing tickets to truck drivers smoking in the cab of their own truck when they pulled on the scales. The scale is within 50 ft of the building.

Down right stupid if you ask me.

I can't atest to how things work in Iowa, but here in Tennessee laws are passed in the capital in Nashville. Sometimes farm agents and law enforcement officers in places, like Hardeman County have to choose which fights they are going to fight, and some of the more unreasonable laws are not enforced.

'Incorporated farms' term may mean the large hog, chicken, dairy operations with a lot of employees and some large family farms with incorporated ownership by family members. Implication is sole propriator ownership will not be affected. I'll have to check on home farm- we have a farm partnership for ownership after father died and split it among us kids. Don't think younger brother will stop smoking no matter what law says. RN

NYS has had a ban on smoking in public places for several years now. You can still smoke at home, on your property, in your vehicles, and private clubs. I would suspect that the Iowa ban is similar in nature. It seems normal now.

You have to be careful with your interpretation of a private club. If the club has paid employees, noone can smoke there. A friend of mine is an inspector for the state and he`s won court cases against "private clubs" who ignore the ban. That being said, I don`t necessarily endorse the law, I figure if a person has trouble with smokers in a club or a bar they shouldn`t work or visit there.

You can smoke at casions in NYS because they are owned by Indians and the Indians don`t obey laws. Check the US Supreme Court docket if you want to disagree with me on that.

Farmers whose operations are incorporated would be banned from using cigarettes on their own property under a provision of the proposed smoking ban, according to an analysis of the bill prepared by the non-partisan Legislative Services Agency.
House Minority Leader Christopher Rants, R-Sioux City, promised Thursday that his party will attempt to win an exemption for farmers, and other lawmakers say the unusual provision is an assault on personal liberties.

"What we've been told is that this means a farmer who is in his tractor in the middle of a field, miles from anyone else, wouldn't be allowed to light up a cigarette," said State Sen. David Johnson, R-Ocheyedan. "That's ridiculous."

Something like alcohol prohibition,if miles from anywhere do you think the law will be obeyed?? but when sueing for compensation,no hope.
I think the whole thrust of this leglislation everywhere is to stop the expenditure of $$billions treating these self inflicted diseases and free up space in hospitals.
When one stops smoking, your sense of smell returns and its a delight to be able to smell the flowers, trees etc but not so the obnoxious tobacco smoke from other smokers and you ask yourself, self,I say, did I inflict that putrid smell on all those others when I smoked, and the answer is always,YES.

Yes Bendee and did you DECIDE when you would quit smoking or did you quit when someone made you? I can still smell all the things I ever could. And another thing, I"ve never heard of anyone around here not having a bed in a hospital available. That being said, I still think it"s all about loseing freedom. They or you can call it whatever makes you feel good but free people like to make their own choices. DD

Can't say Michigan is a mecca of freedom, but the government is so obcessed with trying to scrape up two nickles to rub together everyday, they don't have time to deal with social issues. Long live Michigans poverty!

Pesticide is a different animal, you get the EPA and USDA and such involved. If it's like Ohio, it would be a warning then about 00 dollar fine. Nobodies gonna go through that much trouble, especially since there won't be anyone in the cab with you.

Hang on there, Chris. They put legislation through to ban smoking in ag equipment? Or was it establishments and ag equipment? That is by FAR the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard a government do. I don't even know what to say next. How could they justify that? In cars on the road it'd be one thing, 'cause it might be distracting like cell phones...but tractors and combines??!!! COME ON!!! I'm not a smoker, and I don't plan to be, but that is preposterous. I didn't mind when our state went smoke-free, and Minnesota is the same way, which I like...but in a farmer's equipment, he oughtta do whatever the hell he wants. GRRRRR!!!! Dang it, man. Got me all riled up.

Smokers have set fire to wagon loads of hay and a few utilty trailers have caught fire on the road when Dufus flipped a butt out the window.I spent a lot of time fixing the side boards on an old chevy that caught fire with a load of baled burlap 40 years ago.No combines here but you could set fire to the straw. No smoking in public buildings here. One city will ticket you for smoking with kids in the car. This may become state law next.I quit smoking 50 years ago.Old friend smoked a pipe for years, lost one lung.

I have been smoking for over 40 years, that is not something that I am proud of, nor is it anything that I should be ashamed of either, I am not afraid of cancer or heart trouble as far as my smoking goes,as it is always has been my belief that when you are called you will go.... that being said I am trying my a$$ of to give up tobacco just so I can get that tax money out of the hands of those dirty ba$tards that think anyone can quit smoking on a whim, and that I am a second class citizen! If they would have had to work like I did, that the only time you got a break, you had to light up, maybe they would not so quick to judge.

A friend who smoked 3 packs a day was spending 450.00 per month.I got him to roll his own, that helped some.I started some tobbaco plants for him but he wont take the time to water them.Tobbaco growing is under gov control but you can grow a 200 foot row for home use.Cigarette paper is treated with sodium nitrate to keep it burning.Get a piece of cigarette paper burning and sniff the smoke.A good friend checked out at 55 ,heart attack. he and his wife had quit smoking. after he died she went back to smoking.Remember when John Wayne did cigarette ads,he went with lung problems.Cigarette smoke is loaded with carbon monoxide. We know a lot more about tobbaco than we did in the 50s.I quit when butts were 25 cents a pack. You could roll 2 packs for 10 cents.

"socialized medicine will be in full swing and you can just walk in and get your cancer treated, as easily as renewing your drivers liscence:)" Not SO...
You should see socialized medicine here in Canada.
Can't get a Doctor, (part of the plan) because the government only pays so much per visit and so many billings a month. Most Doctors take 2-month holiday twice a year; spend that time at their other practice cosmetic face-lifts which is not covered. Over the years there are a lot of medical procedures that are not covered also medicine.

Privatized medicine is just around the corner here. We have a lot of walk in clinics.

Taxes collected for health care are put in the general fund and then there isn't enough for proper health care.

Don't get me wrong it's still better than nothing.
Or paying $100 - $400 per visit, the dentists charge about $300 to as much as they can per hour.

How many families in the USA go broke because of high cost health care and some that pay high insurance premiums that don't cover what you got.

Yeah, but if I had a dollar for every "illegal" or non-politically correct thing I've done farming then I'd be a rich man. You'd have to want to get a ticket.

How many of you think twice about some enviromental, open burning, permits or equipment safety laws? Not to mean acting in a maverick cowboy way, but using common sense on some ridiculous smaller regulations.

But I'm definately not advocating smoking, had an aunt that passed away at 50, can't say that it was direct from smoking, but I'll bet it contributed.
