hi, guys, need some help with a problem with water in the oil on a tractor i am thinking of buying.. what are the odds its just a head gasket, versus a cracked block. i have the capability of fixing either, but i think the cost of a different block would make the tractor to costly. would appreciate any comments on your experiences.

If it was from over heating and not setting outside where rain could get in, and it was a head gasket you would most likely have a miss if it is still running. If it is running and not missing my guess would be a freeze plug in the top of the head. They will tend to get holes in them in time without being overheated. If I were checking I would take the valve cover and check there first with a Little pressure in the radiator. If the leak was not there would remove the pan, wipe everything dry and with a little pressure on the radiator check for leaks from around the bottom of the sleeves. I would do that before removing the head. (if it is not a running tractor)

We need more information. THe following random questions/thoughts quickly come to mind:

Does it run? If so, look for evidence of compression in radiator while it's running.

Take a compression test.

ANY external cracks in engine block?

Is there anti-freeze in the oil, or is it possibly just rain water?

History. When was it last operated? Was it working properly then?

Do you know/trust the seller?

I wouldn't think a used block would bt too costly if you shop around.

Well slow down just a little. $1600 is a lot of money for a WD that needs work.

Or how much water is in it. Have you taken the oil pan drain plug loose? Is it antifreeze or clear water? Could just be condensation?

Plan for the worst, hope for the best. May be the O rings not sealing the sleeves. Plan on an overhaul.

What does the owner say it is? i would explain how you see the situation and see if a reasonable price can't be reached.

he thinks it is a head gasket, but he is just guessing like the rest of us.. he is not experienced in the tractor repair either. he is asking 1600.00 but it has a loader and a rear blade too.

If he overheated the engine it may have a cracked head. Check for bubbles in the radiator when engine is at an idle. I would do a lot checking
before deciding. He's too high in price. Hal
