Our 10+ yr old Zenith went out a couple of months ago. Didn't even consider getting it fixed since its analog. In Feb. of 2009, they will cease to broadcast in analog and if you don't have a digital tv, no signal. Doesn't make sense to spend much $ on a tv that will be good for a year at the most (unless yours is digital).

I don't even watch TV, but in reading the consumer
reports book, those large screen tvs are one of 2
things they recommend you get the extended
warranty.

I would also, generally, recommend getting a new one but FYI,

My wife and I had a 19-inch Samsung that lasted over 20 years - until the kids moved it between the camper and one bedroom or the other too many times.

I would get another tv. Do you remember when you could take all the tubes out of your tv, and take them to the drug store where they had a tube tester, and you could test your own tubes, and they also sold new tubes. I did that a few times with some success. Stan

When I worked at a shop about 4 years ago. We charged about $30 to look at it and then gave an estimate. Of course, thats here in nebraska. It also depends on whether you get your tv is a widescreen and if you get your tv over the air. In 2009, all over air signals are going completely digital and any older analog tvs are going to be SOL with out a converter box. If your tv has a digital tuner or you have satellite or cable then it should still work fine. Usually it"s not worth repairing, besides previous stated circumstances, if it costs more than half of what you bought it for. When we did repairs, we did it to component level and the cost for a long time was about $125 plus parts. You might have to look around to find a place that just won"t replace the board outright as that was the way a lot of places were being forced to go when I got out, blame the corporations. Unless you can find some nice tech or independent company who will do it for less plan on $150 - $200 average. They should give you an estimate and if you"re lucky its a common problem and a relatively simple fix, faster turn around that way. Otherwise if you're looking to upgrade here"s your chance.

Within the year, the govt. has forced all broadcasters to go to digital. You"ll be needing a new TV, or at least a converter box. Suggest you got with a new TV with digital capability.

Most repair shops charge about $75-100 just to look at it, then if it is a circuit board that should be about $125 or more. Cheaper to get a new one.
