This is for a motor mower.should be same.
systematic diagnosis of magneto trouble....
remove spark plug
lay on engine metal
lead and top of plug free from metal
spin engine over and see if spark jumps plug gap
good spark good magneto.

no spark

clean and reset plug..no spark

Remove from plug and place 1/8" from mower body
spin motor... spark..plug r/s.
No spark.
remove magneto flywheel
clean and adjust points, all connections clean and tight, unbroken leads, and do not rub on flywheel.
temporarily replace flywheel and test whether spark at terminal of HT lead.
Spark magneto good
No spark. have magneto and condenser tested.

To remove flywheel, prise up with screwdriver..tap nut with soft faced hammer to break flywheel loose. steady as she goes or flywheel can break.

Just did that . Briggsandstratton.com has a good site. Real good. To test connect an ohm meter to the sparkplug wire and then other to ground should be about 2500 Ohms. Check the site out though. For 16 dollars you can get a kit to do away with points. easy to do!!!

Check the points, their cleanliness and gap, replace the condenser (under the flywheel), replace the flywheel key, check that the core of the coil just clears the flywheel (often needs to be a gap of about .007", thickness of a business card), then if it doesn't have spark the coil is highly suspect.

Then you can take the coil to a small engin shop that has a coil tester and they can check the coil for shorted turns.

Sounds about like a model 6S Briggs.

Not trying to be a SA, but what do you call "good"? Did you test the condensor? It could be breaking down. Most of the old point igntion had very little coil failure, it was mostly the points and condensor. If you have not changed them, that would be the first thing I would do. Then if you have set the coil air gap at .010, and still have no fire, you have a bad coil. that is about the only way to test them, not many people have a coil tester any more, they are just not used. Check the magnets in the flywheel for magnetism. Touch them with a flatblade screwdriver they should should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Clean them if they're rusty. These are what creates your spark when they pass by the armature. Hal
