Need help on my Ford Ranger heater

You guys are always so helpful, I thought maybe someone could tell me what might be wrong with my pick-up. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. Just recently my heater decided it will only blow air on high setting. The blower switch has 3 lower settings but it will not blow air unless it is switched to the highest setting. I checked the wires connected to the heater motor under the hood. Everything there seems to be connected. I am wondering if the dashboard switch might have gone bad. What puzzels me is that it would seem to go bad on all the settings not just the bottom three.

The heater resistor gets HOT in normal operation, so it's located in the heater fan's airstream.

If the heater fan can't start 'cause of a bad motor, or dirt and debris or ICE in the fan, the resistor would get REALLY hot and start a fire and burn up the poor little Dorf, so they have a couple of "one-time" THERMAL FUSES built into the resistor assembly that blow when it gets excessively hot. cutting the power to the fan motor.

You must have had it on one of the lower speeds when it couldn't start, thereby heating up the resistor and blowing the thermal fuse for the lower speed(s).

If ICE was the problem, replacing the resistor assembly should take care of the problem. If the motor is going bad, or there's debris in the fan area, the new assembly will blow, sooner or later.

your ranger has a bad reostat, located on the firewall where the wires plug into the heater . unplug wires , then remove 2 screws holding plug socket to heater box. local napa should have the part. When the reostat goes bad, the heater switch defaults to high . hope this helps. Dave

Under the hood (where the wires go into the plenum of the heater) there is a plug that attaches to a 2 inch square bulkhead that is atached with 2 screws. Remove these 2 screws and you will see the resistor that causes the reduction in fan speeds. Either your resistor is bad or its connections are bad. The resistor is two coils of resistance wire about the diameter of paperclip wire in several coils about 1/2 inch diameter. It's like this on older Rangers

dcroeker- I pulled out the part you described and sure enough the resistor was badly rusted and the plug had broken contact with the unit. When I pulled of the plug, the one spade broke off from rust. Also my plug needs to be replaced because it too is in bad shape. The plug looks like it got hot and was partially melted. One of the other posters said NAPA may have it so I will check with them today. I hope they have the plug as well.Thank-you you to all who replied to this topic.

If you can't get a plug, carefully note the location of each wire in the plug configuration. Then, apply individual termanals to the wires and hook them up seperately to their respective locations on the new resistor.
