i have a 1964 ford 2000 tractor with a select-o-speed transmission. when having the side plate for the disengagemnent lever off i noticed what looked to be a bearing placed around the pto shaft that floated along the lenght of the shaft. the bearing was not attached to anything. the pto shaft was attached to the output shaft of the transmission and the rear pto shaft bearing with little or no play in the shaft. any help on the purpose of this bearing?

Yup Ford is the board to post this on, but fortunately Ultradog picked it up and brought it to us.
Here's my responseLink

If #2 is correct, you should have fluid transfer from your transmission to your hydraulic reservoir.
