Along with what old crane guy says bout figuring out what equipment you need running as a minimum- note too that generators have two ratings. EX. Winpower 25/45 KW. 25 KW is the normal rated running load capacity, but it can put out up to 45KW when starting loads. On our dairy, the biggest motor we had was a 10 hp on the manure pump, so we needed a 25/45 to start and run that. While milking, we had three 5hp running two vacuum pumps and the bulk tank, but would not run the barn cleaner, or silo unloaders/TMR. On grid, we could be running close to 40 hp at one time, but we didn"t NEED a genset big enough to run that at once.

What kind of operation you run is irrelevant.
When sizing a generator whether for a farm or a nudie bar youve just got to look at the equipment you plan to use and find out what it draws. I usually total up all the 110v stuff (lights, small appliances, etc.)and convert it to watts (volts x amps= watts)then the same thing with the 220, total your watts and that gives you the # you need to run everything at once...It might be the case that its not practical to buy a gen big enough to run everything at once so you might wanna just figure out what items you MUST run at the same time. When figuring things like air-cond, water pumps, or pumps of any kind make sure you check the Starting Amps when doing your load calc. as that # will be much higher than Running Amps. (theres no law that says you have to start these at the same time)..Also make sure your 110v load is balanced between your 2 hot legs. Do you have a good Idea what kind of equipment you'll be powering? and what it draws? Also try to keep in mind future needs and balance it all out with you wallet/wife (the only hard part of the whole thing)...Good Luck...Don

Is there an electrical utility generator transfer switch already at the utility pole or at the barn? What is the amperage, phase and voltage of the electrical service? What do you have for tractor HP & pto rpm to run a generator? Do you have 500 gallons of fuel on hand? What part of the country?

Sorry I can't answer your question. But saying common sense is needed.... perhaps a better and kinder answer would have been far better. One can't help but wonder what kind of person is answering back at times. Common sense would be to ask him question with out saying .. your not useing your head! Then he will know next time to give more info.

Well,OK I just cant answer that question. Do you have 2 sows in pigs or(2000 pigs)?
Do you want me to ask "Just how many pigs do you have and how large an operation do you have,or just how big are you, do you have air conditioning, and all the other questions before answering HOW BIG A GENERATOR DO I NEED. You get the picture????? ??

You might be new to this game, but it only takes common sense,OK
