Cummins 5.9 Surging at Idle - Video

So, I've picked up a 6BTA for my White 2-135 repower project. It was a test engine from Case IH with 2700 hours on it. It's sat for the last 10 years.

At idle, this engine has a tendency to surge. This occurs even at high idle. I don't have a radiator on it so I'm limited to only running it for a few minutes at a time. What do you think is causing the surging? Could it just be from sitting and getting it out and running it hard will settle things down? It has a rotary pump.....are there any external adjustments that would help dampen the response.

Check out the video I took of it running.....

LOOK at the valve cover.. not a 24v with a vp44, that was a 12 valve with mechanical fuel injection. Either had a rotary (VE) or inline (P-pump) injection pump, so there were NO lift pump/transfer pump problems on these motors. Could be air or someone could have been adjusting the pump for more hp, which affects the govenor response (little bit of surge..?). Is it still all stock or has it been muddled with? Really did not sound bad to me but I am no expert either.

Hello E
The engine does not sound bad, the surge is in the fuel pump. The idle screw is against the fuel rod, and there may be a bit uneven. Its like a screw against a flat surface that is worn a depression in it.I think with the load on the engine you may not notice it that much. If it does it when hot ,then you have to go inside the pump and smooth it out.
Guido.

Personally I don't think it's all that bad. All of my brother-in law's CIH magnums did that even with tranny load, alternator, water pump, etc. I actually thought the throttle response was excellent for an engine that has sat for 10 years. Myself I'd put it in and work the snot out of it for a few hours and then change all the fluid and filters.

That's what I thought.

Thing seems pretty darned good for an un-married outfit.

Its getting some air through the line thats drawing the fuel, maybe a fitting or some fittings are loose, could be fuel filter, fuel pump, but its not too bad.I think a fitting is loose, maybe a bad line, maybe the return line.

I have seen Ford engines with rotary pumps surge quite a bit more than that from an air leak on the low pressure side of the pump. Check the filters and such...
I might also be inclined to change the lift pump. Other than that the hunting doesn't seem too bad to me.

Install a new filter and bleed all your lines. Insure that what's mentioned above is not part of the problem. If all that doesn't solve your problem get to a www search engine and look up "diesel injector pump overhaul".

When my pump went out on my JD 4010 that's what it did. It had it's own mind and paid little to no attention to what I was trying to do with the throttle. Around here repair for a 6 cyl pump was around $1000. On the www I got a super job for less than $500. Don't remember their name but on their site they post their prices which are a function of the number of cylinders and tell you to call them and discuss shipping. Reason is you need to supply a lot of little hookup parts to it (that I figured they didn't need and would just loose) so that they can set the fuel output correctly.

Sometimes a surge is caused by a leak in a supply line.

I once had a K5 Blazer with a 6.2 diesel that would surge for the first minute or so after startup after sitting overnight. I rigged an air hose coupler with a regulator on it onto a fuel tank cap. I started out with zero pressure and gradually increased. By the time I got the tank pressurized to about 5-7 pounds pressure, a fitting by the fuel filter squirted a small stream of fuel about two feet. Fixed the fitting and no more surge.

I'm not sure this could happen with a gravity feed system, but it's a thought.

Check to make sure that your fuel return line to the tank is not blocked.

Heck, I dunno.

Always thought it was more or less normal for 'em to "romp" like that when ya twist their tail and they are sitting on the shop floor.

My "98 Dodge surges maybe 30 or 40 rpm after starting due to the fuel and manifold heaters cycling. Caused by changing load on the alternator... Gene

Given the history of transfer pump failures on that engine and the consequences for the injection pump when it does fail, I'd put a new transfer pump on it before the next startup. Wouldn't hurt to have coolant in it while running. Hot spots develop quickly.

e - Perhaps if it just had some accessory loads like alternator, ps pump, fan, etc, things might settle down? Also having the additional weight of the clutch might smooth things out. It sounds pretty good for an engine that sat for 10 years!
