I have a 1958 JD 620 ser.#6222532 with a clutch problem stumping me and some friends who are familiar with JD two cyliders. When attempting to engage the clutch with proper spring adjustment, the lever will not move forward. I took a complete clutch assembly off of another working late 620, ser.#6220524 and still no luck. The problem tractor has parts off an early 620 which according to the JD parts catalog are compatable. The first reduction gear cover on the problem tactor also has the old style first reduction gear cover A551R which I believe is no different than R20183R besides the plug in the bottom side of the cover.

I had that same problem a couple years ago with an early 620??? I had that first reduction gear cover on and off dozens of times. The answer is some of those clutch parts don't mix.The covers ## is different and it is casted differently on the inside. An old FRG cover and a new style clutch fork will not allow the fork to stay engaged.. good luck Henry

I have both the old and new style clutch forks and neither will work. I have also double checked my crankshaft endplay and made sure the shims were correct. It doesnt seem like the first gear reduction cover would make a difference, but I'm gonna try it anyways. If it works I will weld the cracks in the case and finally be done with the nightmare. Thankyou for your info.

Did this problem suddenly occur, gradually occur or occured after performing maintenance? Has the clutch driver ever been off the crankshaft to service the inside friction disk? Are the dogs, togels and pins clean & intact?

I bought the tractor off of and old man and bought it as scrap/basketcase for a challenging project. I have just completely restored the tractor and all of the dogs, toggels, and pins are new as is the driver disc. The clutch springs and discs are also new. After rebuilding the engine which had not run for close to 20 years, I put the clutch back together and started the tractor and I haven't had the clutch working yet. I think I'm going to try putting on the original first rear reduction cover and see what happens after that. The reason for putting the early 620 cover on was that the original one was cracked in two spots possibly from ice damage or improper installation. In the parts catalog there is no serial break for the different covers, just one cover has a plug underneath the crankshaft, which is the one belonging to the late 620.

I was wrong about the first gear reduction covers not having a ser.# break. The parts catalog states that -6217318 had a cover with oil filler nipple and cap and 6217318- had cover with plugs. By plugs, the catalog is referring to a plug under the crankshaft and one for a filler, both are turned with a 3/4" socket driver or similar tool.
