Where are Hinos made? Are they crap vehicles? I found an ad for a 1980 5 ton with the 28' van box removed. 6 cyl diesel 5 speed, no rust, for $2400. Anyone know how much these things could haul/tow? Are parts hard to find or expensive? If I put a deck on the back I'm thinking I could move my tractor/hay in style, without buying a new trailer.
Thanks for any thoughts.

jay

Made in Japan, very reliable, loads of them here in New Zealand, also rebadged as a Ford N series truck. Hino stands for: Hope it's not ours! lol.

2007 Sema Show,Las Vegas. Toyota had on display a 1 ton Crew Cab Dually prototype with an 8 Litre Hino Diesel. Look out Power Strokes and Dura Max. Cummins has nothing to fear. They are not in contention for any thing such as Market share or are they? Maybe!!

Hino's are the number one selling medium duty trucks in the world! Toyota is a major shareholder and is the largest automaker in the world I believe. I know they are expected pass GM in North America with over 10,000,000 sales of new cars to Gm's 7,000,000. Hino's are well known for outstanding reliability. It is not uncommon for a Hino diesel to go over 1,000,000 miles. They have cylinder liners like an IH DT466, which makes them much more desirable. I had a 1989 FE (4 ton) and was getting at least 16 MPG empty. Much better than my old GM 366 gas that got about 8 on a good day. Hino came out with conventional cabs a few years ago to compete with that market. They have a much tighter turning circle for better manuevering. I'd buy another Hino in a minute. The 4 cylinder turbo FB's get over 20 MPG and they are a 1 1/2 ton rated truck. Dave

Not sure if they are affiliated with Toyota, but they are very common in Japan (the leading truck there)- they just don't emphasize export. I took in a '91 Hino FA with 14' van box to pay off a debt- wasn't too excited about it, but it was all the guy had. Allowed $2,000 on it, and I'm well satisfied. Turbo diesel, starts on the second revolution even 6 months after I last ran it, whether I use glow plugs or not. Shorter turning radius (by far) than my Ford or Dodge pickups. Great little truck.
