knocking noise, black smoke, and a governor problem

I replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires on my Case DC. Once I got the plugs in and the wires connected, I fired it up to see if I got everything right. Once I got it going, about every 3-5 seconds, a puff of black smoke would come out of the muffler. Is this a cylinder not firing or is the timing just off? Anyway, after a minute or so, I engaged the PTO to see how it would run with it on. The tractor started to blow more smoke and make a knocking noise in the engine. I turned it off right away, and now here I am. What is exactly wrong? It never smoked or made the knocking noise before I replace the spark plugs and wires. The timing was off a little however, and something is wrong with the governor, because whenever it gets warmed up, it will idle way up and out of control, unless I have it idled down to as slow as it will go. Is this a governor problem, or is it something that needs to be adjusted on the carbuerator? Thanks

Wrong plugs maybe. Did you do the plug wires one at a time or pull them all at the same time. If you pulled them all you might have them on wrong and its running on only 2 cylinders.

You were right on the money old. When I put the wires back on, I went counter clockwise instead of clockwise on the cap so I ended up with the two cylinders mixed around. 1 and 4 were right, but 2 and 3 weren't. Thanks

Funny how if you have the plug wires on wrong it will make them smoke and do funny things

A random thought--how about your air filter? I've had mowers traded in before that smoke and lack power bad---only the air filter.
