I am an Indian farmer having nearly 70 acre fully irrigated land. Three times in year we use to grow crops as follows

(1) July-October: Rice
(2) November-February: Wheat, Muster, Sunflower etc.
(3) March-June: Rice, Sunflower.

Therefore, we usually cultivate nearly 210 acres of field through out year. I have one 70's model Escort(~40HP) tractor and after nearly 30 years good service it gives some time serious troubles. In our country farmer hardly requires giant tractors( unlike USA farmer) therefore, we are thinking to buy one new tractor within range of 40 to 60 HP. Among varieties of tractors brands, I am thinking about these five.

(1) Massey-Ferguson
(2) Swaraj ( National )
(3) Farmtrac
(4) Mahindra (National)
(5) New Holland

Can anyone suggest me which would be preferable for me, maximum time we uses tractor for cultivation rather than harvesting or other farming stuff. We are familiar with first four tractors listed above but not fifth one which is new to the Indian farmers. While during my agriculture Web search I often come across fascinating world of New Hollands Tractors.

Padmakar,
I would give some serious consideration to the Farmtrac. I too am looking to purchase a new tractor and have researched the brands a bit.

In 2000, New Holland bought Ford"s tractor business and took over production of the "blue" tractors. During the 70"s and 80"s a company there in India, I believe by the name of Escort, produced the tractors that were widely loved here in America. With the purchase of the Ford tractor business by New Holland and not the designs and patents of the older tractors, Escort purchased the designs and patents on the older tractors that they had been producing for years and renamed the tractors, Farmtrac.

In addition Escort makes and markets the Long brand of tractors, though they are completely different from the Farmtracs (Fords).

As the other posts have mentioned, service after the sale is one of the most important things to look for. There is no substitute for a readily available source of parts in the event you experience a problem.

I have heard it said and cannot verify it, that many of the parts between the original Fords are interchangeable with parts on the new Farmtracs. While I like the classic design, I would have to bet that engine parts would not qualify for interchangeability due to the technological advances over the last 20-30 years.

The Farmtrac has been my most serious contender thus far for several reasons:

1. The hoods and cowlings are still made of metal on the larger tractors and I view this a bit more forgiving than plastic. I had rather put a dent in a hood than tear it off due to being plastic.

2. Price. Because it is the same design efficiency of production and less re-inventing the wheel has lowered production costs.

3. Simple design. They do not have a lot of fancy bell and whistles that will later break and render the tractor inoperable.

4. Pletiful availability of parts. My dealer locally says he can have any part within 48 hours. Hope this helps you to make an informed purchase.

I would suggest you go with Mahindra. They are a reliable tractor and are built in several models and are of a proven International Harvester Company design which started in the 1950's with the B-275. They are basicly simple and a lot of tractor for the money.

Padmakar, I would think the Mahindra would be the way to go for you.
I would think the parts would be readily found where you are and they are an exceptionally good tractor. I have neighbors who have gotten many, many years of good service from Mahindra.
You will see the New Holland advertised very heavy, they took the Ford's place.
We get good service from the 3930 New Holland it's a 45hp model, they don't give much trouble, but when they do, you better have plenty of money, the parts aint cheap. They have so much plastic stuff added on for looks that they are not easily repaired either.
I think all around, given your location and the power required for your operation I would go with the Mahindra.

Padmakar Parihar, What part of India are you located? As for your question regarding tractors, you have already been given some good advice from the other posts. I have had the opportunity to be in your country three different times. As a mechanical engineer and as a farmer I more than casually observed your tractors. I am not familiar with the Farmtrac. Of the remaining on the list, I am somewhat aware. The Massey Ferguson would be my choice. The quality of these appear to be the same the world over where the other tractors (not including New Holland) are copies which did not reproduce to the originals. In my opinion, New Holland has not done anything to what used to be a Ford tractor, in the horsepower that you would be buying, except to cheapen it. Any one or all on the list may perform but with the restraints and costs on available imported parts and the need to have a basic no frill tractor that will do the tasks day after day with minimal repairs and low technical support stick with the tractors you know. If all things are equal among these, then look at the subtle differences in the machining on the M-F. The differences that you can see on the outside are most likely present on the inside. Good luck

The same advice applies to tractor purchases the world over: Service after the purchase is as important as the tractor itself. Buy a tractor that you can get parts for, and that a local dealer or mechanic can service.

From the list you've given, I have knowledge of only two. Massey-Ferguson is very well thought of around here, and if you can get service on it in your area, should make you a fine tractor. It is my understanding that Mahindra is an International Harvester design, produced under license. Again, it should be a good tractor for you, and being a "local" brand, might be easier to get service for.

Good luck.

Can't help you with your question but is the Mahindra the same as an IH tractor? I have IH and Ford myself. What is the price on wheat over there?

I'm sorry Wayne. I could not give reply of the your query about wheat prices immediately due to some personal problem. Its quite variable in Indian domestic market, however, one can expect an average US$138 for one tone(1000KG)

Kind of interesting, since New Holland & Case (International) have merged. I wonder how that will affect the Mahindra licence?
