GM 200 r4 metric trans

I have an 81 olds regency 98 with a GM 200r4 metric trans.It has 160,000 miles on it. Recently it started making a buzzing noise from the transmission in every gear except reverse. The noise appears with the engine running below 800 RPM. The noise seems to be coming from the shifter area. It sounds like a loose catalytic converter panel but that isn't it. It doesn't seem to have an effect on the operation but it is noisey at an idle.
Anybody ever have a similar problem or have an idea on what it could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you mentioned catalytic converter, I have seen several that something inside was loose and noisy. At idle you could hear it from 200 feet.

If the pump is going. The new replacement 10 vane unit runs smoother than the old 7 vane. A hardened stator hub never hurt either. There is a larger servo piston for the 2nd gear band for less slippage. If the transmission is ready for a rebuild. There are worse choices than a HD towing unit from Summit racing.

There MAY be a reason for the buzz within the tranny's hydraulic system. Different trannys, over the years, have had problems where a pressure regulator, or something of that nature would ewer, then chatter and buzz.

Yu might search the 'net for any recalls or fixes for something of that nature with the 200R4.

HOWEVER, start with the simple things, by checking for any missing grommets or "isolators" in the shift linkage that may be missing, and letting metal parts contact each other.

It could even be a sign of failed motor mounts.

I had a Chevypickup that would make the damnedest noise in the shifter. It was the parking brake cable, which having gotten out of place, was rattling against the shift linkage.

To: Allen In NE...I have a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and the automatic transmission has started to leak out of the "vent" on the top, right up by the flange where the tranny mounts to the engine...it appears to be blowing out of the little cap that spins around...I have not changed the filter as it only has 51000 miles..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

Is this gasket something that a shade tree mechanic could replace? I generally do most of my onw work on my cars..

Depends on how far you are comfortable going..
I wouldn`t try it with the trans in the vehicle. You have to pull the side cover, pump, harness, valvebody, and then the channel plate. So you have the trans half disassembled.

With the right tools and equip, it`s half the job it is trying to fight it with the vehicle on the ground and the trans in the vehicle, and without being able to set the trans verticle, you run a big risk of the support or 2nd clutch drum dropping out of alignment.

If you have many miles on the car, it`s a great time to look at the drive chain and definately the 4th clutch hub, they`re starin ya right in the face anyway. The aftermarket makes a 4th hub with tempered splines that is way better than the OEM design. Then when you go back together there`s a couple of electrical components you have to replace, or your asking for trouble..

If your thinkin you want to try it give me a shout, otherwise find a transmission shop around you with a good reputation, and have him quote you a price.. BW

If it`s leaking out the vent, it`s usually caused by a blown channel plate gasket in the area below vent. This is the first year of the 4T65E trans, since then that gasket has been updated twice to the current design because of this problem.

It is a line pressure(high pressure) area, so it could cause problems down the line.. Same theory as tractor hydraulics if you have a pressure loss somewhere it will affect how your whole hyd system works.. Hope this helps BW
