What would be the best early 50's tractor to buy with dual hydraulics that has around 40 HP? I was thinking an Oliver 88. What do you guys think? I'm sure everyone will have their own favorite. Thanks

I'd look for the best Farmall 450 gas I could find...it's a tractor with just about everything you need and a good looker that you can find any part for....and they're cheap compared to SMTA's.
I don't know about other brands except John Deere and they're not cheap for good ones.

Why a 50 year old tractor? There are 20 year old used tractors with more features, fewer hours, less abuse for similar money.

B&D, That Oliver will be here for another 50 years.Doubt too many newer tractors will even see 50 years total.

You won't go wrong on a good 88.But if you can find a supper 77 or 88 with the better hydraulics and brakes.

What do you need the dual hydraulics for? In the 40 HP class, a tractor with a 3 pt. hitch is most desirable and gives you a more versatile machine with lots of implements available. If the hydraulics are for a loader, many tractors can have a front pump installed, or a PTO pump. You could get a newer than a 50's tractor as well. Are you thinking of buying or just asking a question? Dave

Oliver 88 or S77 would be the best if you aren"t going to use a 3pt a lot. Aftermarket 3pts for these tractors are clumsy and make implements hard to hook up. A Ford would be better for this type of use but the Oliver would be better than the Ford in everything else.

The 88 not only has dual hydraulics, it also has
independent PTO that you won't find anywhere except
on a Cockshutt but the Cockshutt won't have the
dual hydraulics

I'm pretty sure the neighbor had a Farmall SMTA with live pto. And John Deere had models going back to 1949 with it.

Independent PTO is completely independent of the foot clutch, can be engaged or disengaged without
touching the foot clutch and continues to run even
when the foot clutch is depressed unless it is
disengaged by its own lever. Any other type is not INDEPENDENT PTO

Massey Ferguson used a two stage foot clutch which
partially depressed disengaged the transmission
but not the PTO. The foot clutch had to be pushed down to engaged or disengage the PTO lever. The Ford 8N had to be completely depressed
to engage or disengage the PTO Engaged with the
clutch up and engine running turned the PTO shaft
To stop it from turning the clutch had to be
completely depressed. That said , I think the early Super MTA
tractors didn't have independent PTO but the later ones did. I don't know of any letter series
John Deere that had IPTO BUT I could be wrong.

live or independent who cares? Re: Best tractor in reply to Dave Sherburne NY, 01-31-2008 14:24:24
Independent or not it's live pto. Who cares? In fact a two stage foot clutch will shut down everything in a problem situation faster than operating two separate controls. Mother Deere released live pto in 1949,1952 & 1957 depending on the models.

A Farmall M is your best buy for the money. You can do almost anything you want with it safely.
I like the sound of the 88, but they aren't operator friendly. An old M will pull the tires off of an 88 any day of the week.

Farmall M's were one of the greatest tractors ever built. That said, in the situation this gentleman is asking about, the 88 Oliver is far superior to the M Farmall. Live power and dual hyd. are nice features to have when using the tractor for farming.

I agree that the M is a good tractor, but if he has to have dual remotes, that's going to be a problem with about anything except the Olivers. Also, Oliver has the independent PTO, and is a great tractor value for their price these days.

I would have to agree with the Oliver S77 or 88 either one. Also either one will out pull the ford 801 hands down. I know I have an 841 and a 77 and the 77 will out pull the 841 and the 841 has a fresher engine then the 77 does.
