Love them old farm tractors and working on them. The most difficult part I have w/ working on these old beauties is convincing the wife that the time and money is well spent. Keeps me sane and out of trouble plus my young sons get involved. I am not sure if I am looking for advice or just venting. My favorite memories I have with my dad are working on and looking at tractors, mostly farmall and IH but I love and respect them all. We still go to auctions and shows whenever we get the chance. I told my wife she can have the house, I just want the shop!!

Didn't have to convince mine... I told her right away that the tractors were here first and they would be the last to go. Been a pretty happy marriage so far. Just moving into our first house and baby girl due any day!

Guess I did it wrong. Bought another tractor last fall. Wife says "either take me on a longer vacation this winter, or I'll take you on a guilt trip". Got tractor running for the first time in about 20 years. Gonna call it "Lazarus" becuase it's been raised from the dead.

I made a back seat for my MTA , wife is disappointed when I take it off and put the tractor back to work. Grandson is old enough now, decided he needed a girlfriend seat on his H. What good fun and precious memories we've created with these old relics(learned that line from my grandson, I think he was talking about me and gramma). If your wife learns to enjoy it with you and the kids thats great, but if not, respect that. You probably don't want to sit through wallpaper and curtain making classes either.

Lawyers advice to female client complaining about husbands collection hobby- when he dies you can slow sell and get most of money he spent back, might get more money if he has been collecting and restoring long time. Divorce split means auction at low price and husbands buddies will get most of collection at low bucks. stay married and get some little things for yourself- you'll win in end. RN

My wife never complains about my tractors. Luckily, we've been divorced for nine years now. Who says that I'm unlucky.

You might try buying her one or letting her pick out one. If you have a area club that pulls, I would suggest letting her pull it. Good luck.

I think the "pull it" reference was in regard to the tractor.

I'm just a young fella, never been married, but if I ever painted up a tractor real nice, I'd paint my wife's name on the back of the seat, like it's hers, and then paint my name on the back of another tractor. I dunno. She might go for that "his and hers" stuff.

You are a very fortunate young man. You have a wife, two young sons, a home, a shop, and old tractor(s). My advice is to keep your priorities straight –wife, sons, home, shop, and then tractor(s).

Getting your two young sons involved with you is one of the best “gifts” they will ever receive and remember – the gift of your time. Once they get involved and start having fun, they will start telling their mom how much fun it is “working” with dad on the tractor. These will be the memories your two sons will also have when they are your age.

Get your wife involved by getting your sons to show her the work they have done on the tractor. Let her drive your tractor – the boys will love it and be the first to tell all the grandparents.

Buy her a tractor! Refurbish her tractor to whatever condition she wants. Both of you go on a weekly tractor tour around the house, around the shop, around the block, around the farm, around the town, etc. My advice is to share more time with her as you do with your tractor.

Continue to take your family to auctions and shows whenever you get the chance. Make a date to go “look” at a tractor that may be for sale locally. Start you a “one of these days we need to” list; then set aside one of your days to do one item on your list.

In the long run it is all about spending your time with your family and getting every one involved with each other.

Hope this helps and keep up the good work.

I agree with severeal of the others. At first I used the wild wimmin thing and she said go ahead, (I think she thought it woldnt work and she was right) so after much thought the next tractor I bought was given to her as a anniversary present and I invited her out to help restore it and she could drive it around. No More Problems. Henry

All this talk about wives reminds me of a friend who plannned to divorce his wife.

"How come?" I asked.

"Well, she hasn't spoken to me in six months."

"I'd give it more thought. A woman like that is darn hard to find!"

Lucky for me, I have an understanding wife. She understands the old rusty tractors I spend so much time with could just as easily be a 21 year old blonde.

Hmmm. After thinking about that one for a minute, anyone interested in a bunch of old tractors?

My wife agrees with my tractor habit simply because she sees the joy it brings to my life. She's even decided that she wants one of her own, so that's on the agenda for the future. Tim

I've found that when I can get the kids out of the house; it's appreciated. The kids will remember whatever it is you're doing with them too. Wish I'd done more too.
