auction coming up at the end of the month. they have a 24t baler on the list. any good? any idea what its worth? say its in fair condition, may need a little tlc. reason i'm looking, there is a horse rescue place down the road that works with handi capped children, they are always looking for hay donations. i have about 12 acres of grass between my two farms that i just bush hog (its along my creeks) they come and pick it up. so i was thinking i'd just bale it and give it to them.

The 24T was a pretty good baler in it's day. Question is how hard it was used and how well it was maintained. If it's in good condition, I sure wouldn't shy away from it if the price is right. Suggest that you will want to find another cutting method. Brush hog doesn't do a great job of cutting and lots of yield is lost.

My 24t has been very good to me. It's not a real fast baler, but it makes nice bales. Parts have been readily available from the local John Deere dealer. A manual is a must.

You dont seem to go wrong with any JD square baler. Guy used a 24t on my place to bale our fields off. Made a excellent square bale, nice and tight, square, not curved like some balers (NH) Now I have a JD 346 with a thrower. I love It.

Good low volume baler. We have two and bale with them every summer. Easy to repair and maintain. I bought an incredibly clean one for $900 about 5 years back and a good one with one broken needle for around $200 a year or so later. Over $1K is too much for these. Prices are a tich inflated right now because of economic issues but you could still find a good one for less than $1K I would think. Bad time of year to be buying.

Pa bought one brand new in 1964. We baled about 3000 bales a year for 30 years. always kept knives sharp and baler well greased. Never spent one nickel on repairs in all those years.

They are a great baler, I have used one for 20 years , keep good roller chains on all the drives and buy a manual and I dont think you will ever regret it. Mine prefers 9000 foot twine but thats probably just the way its set up

My dad had one for 30 years as well. When he got it, he took some of it apart and painted it. During the last few years before we sold it, the knotters were skipping a bale every 6 bales. We sold it finally when we quit farming.

An all around EXCELLENT baler, by any means.

Betcha there were 30,000 bales clocked on that thing.

30-35 years ago, I put up MORE hay than I care to think of with a 24T. It was a good baler, gave very little trouble, but is nowhere as fast as, say, a 336.

If you don't have too much hay to put up, and it's in decent shape, it should work out OK for you.

Besides the knotters and needles, other things I would suggest looking at are the plunger (to see if it's all cracked up, or had slopply repair welds), and that the plunger guides and tracks are in good conditon, as well as the knives, and the pickup.

Also, check to see if the crankshaft bearing, as well as the "wrist pin" are in good shape.

If not greased and taken care of, the crankpin gets out of round, and you'll have a knock, and the plunger will be more prone to cracking, from the extra pounding frpm the slop in the bearing.

If there's any question about the drive chains being worn or badly rusted, replace them, as that's a LOT cheaper than it getting out of time, and whacking needles, and possibly knotter parts.

One of the best JD made in my book.

Now I'm trying to remember where you're from.Location is a BIG factor in price.

Around here(SE MN),a good cond one would bring $1500-$1800.Big square and round balers are getting more popular around here
