I think I'm the only parent here that didn't send their kid to school today.Got up at 5:00 and followed weather pattern coming in.Didn't look good, but schools still on schedule. It was still clear as of 8:00.

They just announced letting out at 11:30.My kid would have had to sit on the bus for 2 hrs and been in class for only about an hour.Zero visibility and 50 mph winds.

City school officials fer ya. DUHHHH..... .First day on the job????

Our school is reasonable unless there is a sports activity that evening, however that is improving.

Tonight we have a EMS meeting and I intend to bring up the issue. We have at best during the work week, myself usualy, (if I'm working near town) and a couple firemen to make calls. Our system of requirments to volenteer are up to a all time high, the cost of training keeps going up, no one works in town anymore. Besides it just costs lots of time and out of the pocket money to volenteer nowdays. If you question the windchill factor just grab a pair of latex gloves and see what ---cold fingers--- realy means.

We have 28 firemen and a dozen EMS. Last fall on one grain bin fire I left town by myself, I do not work well by myself, and don't like rejection. I told the guys that I realize I get a little gamey in my turn out gear, but I have been known to use deoderant from time to time. All jokes set aside this is sad to say the least, and no idea how to change it. All the shinny trucks and expensive equipment need man power to operate.

To our advantage less kids ride the bus as little farms become part of a corperation big farm. And alot of kids drive to school.

The kids go to the snow slopes, speach contests, golf days and sports events till who laid the rail. We live in a very hilly area, and cell phones may not work when needed. The county can not possibly put enough sand on the roads, and the buss drivers are many times forbidden to chain up---chains cost to much money! Can you imagine a bus upside down over a bluff? I wonder how many sets of chains the big dogs salary increase would buy. He am a beery mart dude.

The (state) smart folks, don't think seat belts on busses are a good idea. They must not have had much school housin.

I would recomend that you call these folks in charge and raise your voices if necessary.

Our school just canceled classes for tomorrow due to the extreme windchills that are predicted. (Aitkin, MN)

Around here the schools weren't letting the kids out until the visibility cleared up a little.

About twenty years ago my wife was coming home early from work because of whiteout conditions, and went in the ditch by a neighbor's house about a mile away from home. She called me from the nieghbor's so I got in the pickup and went to get her. On the way home we came upon a school bus that had gone in the ditch because of a whiteout. I had a topper on the pickup at the time so we loaded up the pickup, front to back with kids from the bus and hauled them to our place. I think it took two trips if I remember right.

Before long my wife, an elementary school teacher, had them doing all sorts of crafts and other things to keep them busy. They were only at our place a couple of hours till the wind died down so the school could bring a bus to pick them up. Then we had to go grocery shopping to re-stock the shelves because they pretty much cleaned us out. Jim

In Texas they have a thing they call average daily attendance. If your child is in school at 10:30 then they get credit for the whole day and the school gets their daily allocation of funding for that child. Hope this helps shed some light. No comment on the wisdom or stupidity.

They get credit for a whole day if the delay in starting is 2 hours or less (western Washington). So they delay start by 2 hours, if there's any adversity at all. Probably not a bad plan here, as when it snows, its always right on the cusp of being too warm, and by 10:30, its usually melted off the roads. "We can't raise pineapples, but we're darned close".

Forecast here says dropping temps from 40's to single figures. Wind chills around -15. Rain changinging to snow. WINTER STORM warning, drifting, whiteouts, strong winds. If that's what you got, sure should have called off schools. Officials should have been on top of that a little more, letting school out early is probably not a good plan. Most schools closed here today, because the snowpack on the roads became glare ice when temps came up above freezing, and it rained. Betcha they are closed tomorrow as well....

I've been an educator for 26 years. There are many factors to consider in calling off school. Most parents are pleased the districts do not easily call a day off.

If your better judgement says to keep your child home, do so. You're the parent.
