A seal broke on my case dc that holds back the grease, so it wont get on the brakes. This must have happened years before I got it bacause it is everywhere inside the brake drum. What is a good solvent to use to get the grease off of everything. I dont have parts cleaner, so there goes that idea. I also have to replace the gasket inbetween the engine and the transmission(gonna have to split the tractor). Do I just have to drain the transmission oil when I do this? How much oil should I excpect to come out of the transmission? I also have to replace the valve cover gasket. Which oil do I have to drain for this? Thanks

Hate to tell you this but I would just replace the brakes. I went throught this last summer, I spent a lot of time cleaning the linings with different cleaners. Put the brakes back together and they held ,but not very good. Didn't feel save, so I put new brakes on worked great. Greg

As Glenster says, brake cleaner. I've had pretty good results by repeatedly spraying it on the lining and blowing off with compressed air. Takes a while and even after all that sometimes when the brake gets real warm, more oil comes out of it.

I wonder if boiling the brake shoes would work.

You'll probably never get it all out of the brakes. You can clean it off the surface, but when they get used it comes back up out of the linings. I have heated the linings with the oxy and wiped off what I could, but it never really gets it all out, and often they end up grabbing or similar afterwards.
One trick if you have clean shoes on the other side, is to clean the dirty ones up as good as possible, then swap one shoe from each side as to make it even. Just a thought.
Stops the grabbing on one side only anyway. Dont forget to heat up the drums when cleaning them too, as a similar thing happens to them. God Bless,
Rex

A lot of the old timers burned the grease off with a propane torch.

for cleanup on the brakes, any auto parts store sells an aerosol brake cleaner. it works well, but does not go far. you can also buy brake cleaner in 1 gallon jugs and use it in a pressure sprayer. napa sells em, well worth it if you have a lot of cleaning to do. about 40.00 for the sprayer, you fill with fluid and pressurize off your air comressor (bicycle pump will work if no compressor)
