I then tried an 8N ford thats also 12 volts and it will not start. Well just for the heck of it I tried the Case SC which is still 6 volts and it turned slow but after a few turns started right up and just purred. So the morale of the story is this. If every thing is as it should be a tractor will start up on 6 volts even when cold so why switch to 12 volts unless you just have to because of other problems

Old - I think both the Ford and the Oliver have, as you said, 'other problems' keeping them from running.

So, does the SC have a mag on it? If you have a 6 volt rig with a coil & distributor that just barely turns over in the cold the starter will be taking so much juice that the coil ain't gettin' enough to fire the plugs but with the mag you still get the fire ..... Roger?? A 12v will turn the starter faster and will still have enough to fire the plugs, in my experience .... it's all about Volts x Amps = Watts, or some such.

Having everything in good working order is probably the key; the mag doesn't hurt either. If the tractor is in good enough condition to hand crank it, it won't matter what voltage you use.

I think olds 88 was just being tempramental. I use my 77 everyday to feed cattle and I've found that I have to crank it a little with the throttle in the forth notch, full choke, then idle it all the way down. Try it again and feather the throttle and she goes. He said it usually starts and did the next day I believe. Just one of those days.

Your right it was just acting up that day. I went out a little later and it started right up. 99% of the time it starts before I can get my hand off the button but that day it didn't. I also know the starter is getting weak which also doesn't help.
