Hi,

I"m running very low on my home heating fuel and it"s Friday and the company wont" be open again until Monday. I"m just wondering if I could just go out and get say, ten or so gallons of diesel fuel and add that to my home heating tank ?

Has anyone done that before and got away with it ?

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

I had the same problem once about 20 years ago and I put 10 gallons of #2 road diesel in the underground tank and it got me through the weekend. Never had any problems with the furnace.

may think about treating it since it can gell up in cold weather

As long as that tank is in the basement there isn't anyway you'd have to worry about it gelling....

It's proably the exact same thing - if not it is very close & will interchange just fine - both will be based on #2 diesel fuel. Have done it often. I'd need 15 gal to get through 3 days in this cold....

In this area, home heating #2 and off-road Diesel fuel are the exact same product, but the State tax is different. Your furnace will work well with the Diesel.

i know a fellow who works for one of the big oil companies who delivers all sorts of different fuels and he says most of the time it all comes from the same tank and they name it accordingly

Brother and I went to the co-op where he has a charge key filled my 100 gallon pickup tank and dumped it in. Used #2 off road diesel. lot cheaper than fuel oil and he is thinking about continue using it. no problems with the furnace. and the fuel guy says its close to the same anyways.

Yup,

I am burning diesel right now in my shop furnace.

Expensive option but otherwise no issue.

I laughed when I read this post because I had this exact same dilema last weekend. Called monday, can't come out till thursday. I went to the gas station and brought home 5 gallons of diesel just in case. I have been using it in my 100,000 btu reddy heater anyway.

Off diesel is cheaper and kerosene will work fine.I keep 5 gal of off road diesel on hand just in case.I used to keep a 50 gal drum of off road diesel on hand before the price went nuts.Dont let the furnace run out because its hard to restart even when you know how.Service call 100.00 here.Just keep the red dyed stuff out of vehicles used on the road.IRS has snoops on the road checking truck tanks for red fuel. The red dry screws up kerosene lamp wicks.Outside tanks have to use a blend of ker0sene and #2 here.If you dont understand fuel jelling put a little olive oil in a cup ,leave it in the refridgerator.

Well, thank you so very much for all the help. I know that I now feel better about this whole thing and I'm going to get my "blue" bottles ready for todays shopping. Oh and yes my tank is in the basement.
