Probably a silly question but... is there anything intereresting to see/do (antique tractor or JD related) in the Washington DC area? Thanks.

Re: Farming Sites near DC in reply to sodly, 01-22-2008 16:40:45
Just outside DC, in northern Virginia, you"ll find quite a few sites for those of us interested in farming, but they are somewhat scattered; you"ll need a car to get around. These next three below are located a half-hour or so outside the city.

The first one that comes to mind is Frying Pan Farm Park, not too far from Dulles Airport in Fairfax County. They have a web site:
Link

Another site that"s very near the previous is the Sully Farm:

Over in the next county (Loudoun County), just outside Leesburg, is the Oatlands Plantation:

Mount Vernon, just south of Alexandria, is a great way to spend an afternoon. Lots to do and see there, and the view of the Potomac from the front porch is very nice.

If you have time, a trip to the Eastern Shore of Maryland would take you into some farm country that is still very active. Take Route 50 East, go through Annapolis and across the bridge, and head toward Salisbury. I think Perdue does a lot of poultry farming there, and in the summer you"ll see all kinds of roadside stands with fresh produce. Near Federalsburg there"s a big show every spring (not sure when) with old tractors, steam traction engines, threshers, etc.

Hope the above links go through, and enjoy your trip!

Hmmm, that sounds different. Seriously, thanks for the input. I've done most of the touristy stuff in the past and was looking for other ideas besides the usual monuments and memorials. Probably not too many tractor collections up in that neck of the woods, I don't suppose.

PA is about 1 1/2 hours away with lots of older model tractors and equipment.

If you've never seen them, it's worth every minute to visit the different monuments, War Memorials, and Arlington Gardens along with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the gaurds. I would guess that you'd find plenty in the Smithsonian as far as farming. May want to get online and print a layout so you can see everything you want if your time is limited. Have fun.

We have a daughter living in DC. We were just there last October, usually make it every year or two, and she flies out here once or twice a year.

There's so much to see/do in DC, it takes a week to realize you haven't scratched the surface. They're not too long on farm stuff, though. Once when our daughter gave me a gift certificate to Amazon, I bought a couple of old tractor books. Her (then) boyfriend couldn't figure out why on earth anyone would want old tractor books.

One exception to the above is Mount Vernon. George Washington was very much into farming and ecology and even had a pit to turn manure into compost. On the estate at Mt. Vernon, there are still original hog pens with the breeds GW raised, etc, plus some of the period equipment, stable with horses, etc. It's worthwhile to visit.

I was in D.C. this past May and went to the Smithsonian to see if I could take a peek at the International 340 with the gas turbine engine in it. I found the building it is in with the rest of the agricultural stuff but the building was closed for renovations. You might want to check to see if it has reopened before you go. There is also a huge US Dept. of Agriculture farm just outside of D.C. in Maryland. Don"t know if they give tours or not but the place is huge. I didn"t think there was any farms that big on the east coast let alone in Maryland.

The Smithsonian might have something on display. Never have been there but I think they own the Allis fuel cell tractor. Not sure if it would be on display though. Just looked it up, unfortunately that particular museum (american history) is closed until the summer.

Smithsonian Museums
Closed museum with pictures of some of the exibits

The exhibits are so varied; theres something for everyone.

I think that the AC fuel cell tractor has been in Hutchinson, MN for recent years. Someone should kick in with a current update.
