I been shopping the net for 18.4-38 tractor tires. Some are listed as R1 and some as R2. What is the difference and does the R mean radial ? I'm looking for just plain bias ply tires, new or used in excellent shape for a non working tractor. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions...Ben

The are radial tires. IIRC. the R2 is a deeper tread depth than the R1, more or less a "rice" tire.

No they aren't radial tires unless the size reads 18.4R38 as opposed to 18.4-38. The R in the R-1 and R-2 designates rear position and the 1 and 2 deem what kind of tread depth. Now when I say rear I mean they are of the typical rear tractor tread type even though you can obviously use them on the front of 4wd's and mfwd and on the drives of combines or even grain carts.

I agree- R1 and R2 was used way before the radial tires came out. But "R" is used in the tire size designation, like 20.8R-38, to indicate a radial tire.

You're RIGHT. With almost ALL new tractor tires being radial nowadays, that one slipped by me.
