I have a white industrial engine. It has a Wico model X magneto. spec XH1137 ser. 2-053230 . it has no spark at the points. I have disconected the grounding (shut off ) wire and also removed it from the points . so that is not the problem.the points gap is correct and everyhing spins ok

It is on a white industrial engine that powers my welder/generator. this thing is 6V.it has been in inside storage for about 18 months. before that it ran fine. I used it over several years periodicaly and it started every time. except for the flat battery I never had a problem with it.

what do I need to do to get the magneto working again. I am not a mechanic but I can follow directions. thanks

I know its not a tractor but I use it to fix my tractor

Magneto coils often have trouble with open secondary coils. If you can find an old time radio man have him test the condenser.Mag parts are expensive.

Check the resistance across the points while they are closed. Should be very low. Do same with points open to check the condensor. Should start low resistance and build up to a very high value over a few seconds.

An impulse is the device on the drive end which stops the magneto rotation at cranking speeds, building up tension in a spring which then trips at firing point allowing the magneto part of the mag to turn quickly. This improve the rate of cutting lines of magnetic flux with the coil windings thus producing a higher current through the points.

Dont depend on an ohmmeter to test condensers.A 1 1/2 battery wont catch lost capacity or leakage that developes at higher voltages.Been testing condensers/ capacitors since 1950.

the points are fine. there is no spark with the engine turning over. its dry and its been inside for 18months.
I dont know about magneto"s
everything seems to be in order
could it be the condenser?

third party image

Here's the impulse coupling on the driven end of
of the mag. You can see the lugs sticking out off the impulse coupling to the far left. Hal

Use some 320 wet or dry on your points until shiny, then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean them again. Hal

Probably just clean the contact surfaces of the points to make sure there is no surface oxidation or other contamination. I usually dry out my magnetoes before putting them back into service, by leaving them in a warm place (the airing cupboard for a couple of days or on top of a room radiator for a few hours) to make sure the coil insulation is dry.

A mag unlike a battery ignition system will not have a spark at the points unless the engine is spinning over. Any time and engine sits like your has the point if closed when left sitting like to corrode and because of that they some times need to be cleaned before they will work. If it where my machine I would either clean the points real good or replace them and then go from there

Is the "impulse" working... does the mag "snap" twice a revolution?

This "impulse" action makes the magnet move quickly past the polepieces, inducing a good current in the coil, making for a hot spark.

If the impulse IS working, other problems could be oxidized points, not making good contact to ground the coil when they're closed, a shorted condensor, or a failed coil.
