Here is the Farmall M that I just bought. It came with a 7ft. sickle mower (#31?) and doesnt run simply because it isn't wired (supposeably). I'll admit, I'm more of a JD guy, but my grandpa grew up on Farmalls and I really don't see much wrong with them.

I've got a lot of questions for you guys;

1. I need a wiring diagram. The tractor came with a wiring harness that the previous owner bought but I need a diagram to make sense of all of it. (I am by far an electrical genious, so please be patient)

2. Any tips on what kind of shop manual to buy? Ive got an owners manual that my grandpa gave me, but I want a good shop manual as well to have as a reference.

Sorry for the long post, I'm sure I'll have more questions as the project progresses. This tractor joins the 1937 JD A I did a year ago.

Thanks for any help

Dollar, go over to the Farmall board and do a search for 6 or 12v wiring. I got diagrams for my M over there but I did'nt save them on the computer. I also have the same mower but I had to cobble up a hydraulic lift on mine.
I have an I&T shop manual and it's given me all the info I needed. You can get those at TSC's or through this site I belive.

That old tractor will be fine with a little work. Check the Farmall forum archives for wiring diagrams. Bob M has a good one or two there.

Your mower isn't a 31. It is a 25V or 27V. The 31 has a different tail wheel, and the lift cylinder mounts on the opposite side. None the less all of them are good mowers.

George,
That must be 27V mower, the 25V has the hydraulic cylinder on the side of the tractor, in front of the right axle. I have a picture of mine mounted on my M but cannot find it right now, other wise I would post it.

Yea, they could be set up either way. When used on other brands of tractor, they needed the cylinder on the mower. I have a 31 that used the tractor lift rod too, but also has the cylinder brackets for the mower itself.

I guess I'll need an "M" to tow my IHC 27 mower with.

I hate to disagree with the big guy but I hate those semi-mounted mowers. You can get a good service manual here or on binder books....or perty much anywheres else that deals in old iron. That's nothing to apologize about, it is a nice looking M. Good straight tin, fenders, lights.
Those tractors may prove to be one of history's greatest success stories.

Just curious why you hated the semi-mounted mowers?
We had 4 of them over the last 50+years, a little clumsy to mount but still easier to mount than the Ford 3pt we also had, with its "torsion bars" that had to be clamped onto the 3pt arms.
The IH semi-mounts seemed to cut good, didn"t hang-up in the mowed hay, and would turn a 90degree turn if a little brake was applied when steering

Where do I start!? First I guess I agree with you on the Ford mower. Has one of them too and it takes two men and a strong boy to mount that sucker on the tractor. Might be easier if I actually put it on the N Ford instead of the newer one that doesn't scare me so bad. Semi-mounts?
Well, they are a menace when off the tractor. You pretty much have to leave on the ground or they will fall just as you are walking by...usually with a pivot motion that brings the guards swinging toward you. Definitely difficult to mount on the tractor AND most of them have those durn wood pitmans that are gettin harder to find and shatter everytime the mower gets a little shimmy.
Been cutting hay with them for a while now and I am ready to ship them. That said, when they work they work very well...just high maintenance.

Dave, your mower is out of time or something if it breaks pitmans very often. I have mowed with them for years without breaking one. Never had much trouble putting on tractor either. There are also many semi mount balanced head mowers around. Of course all mine are IH, don't know about others. I did have a No 5 JD for a while, and it was a good mower too.

Hiya George! They is all #5 mowers except the Ford 3 pt. I'd mow with that Ford all day except it is hard to get on the newer tractors and it do tend to drag in the hay. No place to hang the shield on the newer tractor. Those old JD's are plain wore out and my point is they go out of adjustment all the time and then explain it to me by breaking my pitman. I just want a nice belt driven mower that won't try to kill me every time I go to put it on and can maybe forgive a little adjustment glitch. Six foot high orchard grass with stems like your finger seem to stress the old #5 a bit too much.

Dave, that old No 5 I had would cut through dang near anything, but it wasn't red, so I sold it to a buddy. You might want to find a IH 1300 they are real good 3 point balanced head mowers. The 450 and 451 NH's are very good too, but a little harder to put on the tractor.

Here's the pictures from tonight. For some reason the valve cover nuts were already off. It is pretty gummy and watery in there. I also found some green liquid in the oil filter:( Antifreeze is coming in from somewhere!

Wish me luck, I may need more that I originally expected!

The gum and goo doesn't look like much more that long-term condensation. I shouldn't worry too much yet about that yet. It can be cleaned up before you try to run her. A good sozzlin' and a brush over the rockers with some kerosene'll take care of it.

As far asa the green stuff, you may still be alright.

What do you know about the work that's been done on the tractor? Did you clean it up to where it looks like it does? Just wonderin' if somebody started a rebuild and didn't exactly finish it. There's other non-disastrous and fixable reasons to find antifreeze in your oil, but I'm wonderin' if somebody stopped mid-project without warmin' it up retorquin' the head, just as a first thing to check out.

Hey now there's a familiar sight! Last summer when I was tellin you about all the gray gook under the valve cover on the B? That's it! Course knowing what little I did I just cleaned it out and ran it a while. After a few runs the gray oil turned to dark brown so I guess the water boiled out of it. You could clear your sinuses pretty good standing over that engine after it ran...steamy! As far as the landscaper goes I can tell you it is more likely that he had this tractor runnin every odd job he could think of. Those fellas like to wring a dollar out of a piece of equipment. Doubt he could have hurt it though.

Guy I got it from says that he had it for about 5 years. He is a landscaper was working somewhere and some excavating company was going to scrap the tractor so this guy bought it at a jobsite-type-deal. He never really used it, just kinda HAD it. I'm guessing it hasn't been worked in years and it is possible that the head has been off, considering the valve cover had no nuts.

I'll keep you guys posted in the weeks to come.

Boy,

She sure looks good to me! Paint is only skin deep anyhoo. By the way, those are one heck of a good mower too.

Wish you guys would tell me where in the dickens you're finding those "correct" IH mufflers. They just make the tractor "sound right" as opposed to the generic $29 kind. :>)

Allan, I couldn't agree with you more. Sure looks all there to me. Is a fine tractor, gonna be a finer and prouder tractor, and that's all that matters.

Gotta take care of that moisture though. Easier to take care of a cough and cold than it will be if let it turn into pneumonia. Bet them lungs can't wait to breath firey warmth.

Muffler?

Mark's Tractors. Giffor, IL. Ph. 217-694-4735.

He's a farmer and in some seasons hard to catch, but he'll work hard to return a message and has the goods. I'll warn you though, he has to pay a fee to CaseIHNewHolland . . . to stamp have them made and stamp their part number onto them. IThat given, I believe his price is pair (his other prices are), but $29 sure ain't gonna cover it.
