I have to get the big nut off on my 1996 Ford F350 with a powerstroke so I can take the waterpump off. It says "Right hand thread" on the shrowd. Before I break something, I want to make sure I know which way to turn the nut. Is it like a regular nut ora backwards nut? How do you hold the pully from turning? I got the special wrench to do the job. Thanks!!

Some auto stores rent or loan the tools.

Sounds like the big nut on the Dodge fan clutches ? Leave the belt on and then get a big wrench and a hammer. Put the wrench on and give the end of it a GOOD WHACK in the direction you want to go. Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty.

the problem with the power strokes is you cannot get a regular wrench in there to get at the fan, with all the shrouds and stuff in there, the only way we found at the shop is to get the special wrench.

Lisle makes a NEAT fan clutch wrench set, for use with an air impact hammer, so you don't have to try to hold the pulley!

them are a devil to get off even with the correct wrenches. here is a photo of our set for the powerstrokes, there is a spanner to hold the fan and the wrench to turn it. you can get the set from napa for about 80 dollars. its a gotta have for the powerstrokes. third party image

You need to turn the nut CCW to loosen if it has right hand threads. Hal

You may be able to use a strap wrench to hold the pulley. Hal
