I just recently bought a 1998 GMC K1500 4X4. I can use a set of tires and I am not sure as of what brand to get. I am thinking some sort of all terrain or somewhat aggressive highway tread. Road noise is not a huge factor but gas mileage is. I will be using the truck for hauling 1500 lb loads once in awhile and going off of the paved road often with it. Just looking for ideas on some good tires that wont break my bank LOL. I would love to get BF Goodrich but not at their prices. Thanks

I've had pretty good luck w/ the Yokohama Geolander AT's. They do decent in mud, and snow, and don't howl too bad. My last set is a set of BFG Commercial Traction TA's. These aren't the AT KO's, but are a Commercial tire. My dad had a set of the older design of these that ran forever it seemed like. I drive gravel to and from work almost all the way, and am liking what I'm seeing for wear. They're not the greatest in mud, but are great on snow/ice. Sizes are somewhat limited in this tire.

Dad's been running recaps on the farm trucks, like another poster, pulling stock trailers up and down the gravel roads, we were trashing tires, we had some pretty bad luck w/ Hankook splitting in the middle of the tread as soon as they got a little wear. He's used some of the Green Diamonds for winter tires, we're on the fence with them right now. When the chunks get enough exposure, they chip out and leave the tire surface kinda feathered out, they almost look like they're not going to wear as well.

I've been a Michelin fan forever, but for the money Continentals are hard to beat.

I've been happy with Michelans and Goodyear Wranglers in load range E. Get 50-60K out of them loaded heavy on 2500 Dodge diesel 4x4.

Man I can't hardy beleive the miles you guys get on light trick tires. I drive GM diesel full sized regular cab pickups. I spend about 70% of my miles on rural gravel roads. I have had them all, michilen, goodyear, firestone, you name it and I have never gotton more than 25000 miles from a set of tires. I do not spin them or abuse them, I do pull livestock and flatbed trailers about 30% of the time. They just wear away, always seem to be replacing tires.

Have you tried truck tires and not a pickup tires? The link below is for a company that sells rims and tires to put 19.5" commercial truck tires on pickups. The price isn't cheap ($500 for 1 wheel and tire), however it will solve your 25k mile tire problem. Reading through the testimonials does a better job than I can here.

My dad put them on his '97 Ram 2500 Diesel. He has about 30k miles on the tires after 2 years with no noticable wear. I highly recommend checking them out.

My dad used to be a tire guy, and he stands by Cooper tires. I know they can cost a little bit more too, but I've never had problems with them.

I also had a set of Sport King's on my truck and I loved them. They were great in mud even with my 2wd F150, and would have been better if I had 4x4.

The one brand I highly encourage you to stay away from is Uniroyal. We've had lots of troubles with their tires in the past, and when the tires later end up on the hay wagons, they're the first ones to go flat over the 25 year old dry-rotted tire right next to it.

How'r the wedding plans coming along? Just about got it all taken care of here...

Don, I worked in a friend's auto shop for three years after I retired from teaching. We sold a lot of tires and one thing I learned, if we sold some one a set of Cooper tires they never came back in with problems, Cooper was without doubt the best tire we handled and we carried Good year B F Godderich, just about any brand..Cooper was number one, when I needed tires for my pick up I went with Cooper just because I knew they were problem free. My truck came with Good Year Wranglers and they were the poorest tire I have owned in a long time, couldn't balance them, dealer adjusted one, I had to buy one and the truck still bounced and shook, pulled to the left. I put the Coopers on and the truck rode smooth, quiet and no pull on the wheel. I have had good luck with Dunlop tires in the past, but I swear by Coopers..and I'm not a Cooper Tire Salesman, just a hobby farmer who drives a pick up.

Yup. My mom's jeep has the factory Wranglers on it yet but they don't impress me.

My dad's Tacoma came with Firestones on it and he replaced them a couple years ago. Not because they were running low on tread, but because they just had poor overall traction.

The only reason I went with the Sport King's on my truck when I had them vs. the Coopers, was 1st money and 2nd the shop wanted to sell me the tires I didn't want. I wanted something better for mud (cooper something or other), but they insisted on selling me the Continental highway tire, because I only had a 2wd pickup and I was a teenager.

I stuck to my guns and found a place that would sell me what I wanted.

I have since replaced them with 2 mis-matched pairs I got cheap (again, money) from my last boss. They were new, but were the spare tires off trucks in a junk yard so they're older and a little weather checked.

Big O tires no good if you drive gravel. I had 4 sets on My 1997 dodge with posi rearend Tire eatin $ob flat all the time love nails. But the warrenty was good only bought 1 set but after the 1st year I had 3 different size tires because they never all went flat at the same time. Hankook are good wear tires so are the cooper. But I will never put on less then 10 ply again just because of flats.

I have had and now have Big"O" Big Foot A/T,LT 235/85/R16 Tires on my Dually and I am more than satisfied with them.Maybe you are in an area where Big O does not have a Store,I find that hard to believe as I have seen Stores from ILL. to Calif. Kelly Springfield and Cooper both have good economical tires I think. I will not even go near a Goodyear, Firestone or B.F.Goodrich Brand Tire. Michelin are the best I think but price scares me. This is just my opinion . I am sure you will find a tire Brand to satisfy your needs.

Get on ebay and type in "chevy tires and wheels" in the search box. Don"t really know whats there for a GM, but I bought 4 new ford F150 17 inch pulloffs on aluminum wheels complete with center caps for $300.00 at my door, and the tires still had whiskers. Another new set of 17" for a Ford F150 supercrew just ended. The bid started at one dollar and no one bid, I would have but they were way out on the left coast.

The problem with buying tires on ebay is, you need to start hunt"n before you really need"em.

I would invest the $ in Michellins, I also would never buy another Good Year again. Had some on a 96 dogde 2500 and they came apart like retreads, they wouldnt do anything about it, took the running boards off, beat the heck out of the fenders, got so mad I traded the truck off. My 2 cents.

I just replaced my Michellins, load range E Mud and Snow tires, with another set after 80,000 miles, they are hands down the best wearing tire you can get and the toughest for light trucks. I did pay $930 for this last set, but Michellins won't let you down, no blow outs.

I've got a '98 Chevy Z-71 on it's second set of Firestone SteelTex....this set has over 60,000 on them, still at least 1/2 tread, first set had 70,000 when replaced. I keep 50+ pounds of air in them, and they're 6 ply...Good tires!! Cmore

I'm running Hankook RT03 tires on both my Geo Tracker and Dodge 2500 truck. I would consider them more aggressive than most all terrain tires but not quite a full blown mud tire. They handle very nice on the highway with almost zero noise but so far they have also performed great off road. With the all terrain tires I had on my quad cab diesel Dodge before it would hardly move in snow in 2wd but with these tires it will even run through wet snow pretty good.

I would take cooper tires off my lawn mower. Huge tire failure for cooper tire and me on cars. BFG on my F 150 and excellent usage.

Well Brad, it depends upon what you'll be doing with your truck for the most part. If its highway use mostly, highway tires it is. Off road, off road tires it is. You'd be surprised how lousy lugged tires like mudders and hawgs are in the snow. Them lugs might spoon mud good, worth little in the snow. All terrain tires are nice too, but if mostly highway use, they wear faster than road radials and worsen fuel economy. About the only advice that I can give you is whatever tread design and brand you go for, make them "LT's" (light truck) for sidewall stability. For half tons, the book generally calls for passenger (car type, passenger van). If you don't mind going down the road like a slinky under load, with a good cross wind, and white knuckles clenching the wheel, nothing wrong with passenger. I'm getting older, my knuckles hurt more these days. If I had a moped with a bed on it, LT's it would be.

Brad, I basically have the same truck just the chevy version. I had 3 sets of Goodyear Wrangler RTS. The truck has 153,000 on it and I just put on BFG Radial Long Trail TA. No complaints with the Goodyears, thought they were good all-around tire. I don't do any more off-road driving ( going through pastures, cutting wood, etc ). I do 100% highway driving now and wanted a tire that would give better mileage. My dad has the same tire on his f150 and has 49,000 on them with 40% tread left so that is why I went with the BFG's.

I had a set of cheap junk tires on my truck for about 50,000 miles before I finally got rid of them... and that was due to dry rot.. if it had not been for dry rot, I could"ve gotten about 20,000 more out of them. Think they were "sonics"

NOw, I run BFG tires, and they are the absolute best tires I can get. I also like the firestone steeltex tires for hauling. BFG All terrain T/A"s suck on gas mileage. I would think rough terrain T/A"s would be better on gas, or you can go with the Long trail T/A"s, which are highway all seasons. I love the goodyear, firestone, and michelin tires, but nothing takes BFG from my top tire choice.

Yall do know that they dont make the firestone steeltex anymore? They replaced them with transforce. I just started on a set of buckshot maxxis mudders. I wish they still make trailblazer brand tires. I had a set of m/ts get 81000 and could not get stuck unless I high centered. They take away all the good tires.

I have Yokohama Geolander A/T, Put them on at 129,000 and now have 189,000 on them and they starting to wear out. Should be able to make it to 200,000. 70,000 on A/T Tires I can't complain

A friend of mine has a 1998 Ranger 4WD. When he bought his truck it had 20K miles on it. When he bought the truck it needed new tires, he bought Good Year Wranglers. He just replaced those tires 3 months ago with truck having 115,000 miles on it, the tires were still Okay but the tread was worn down (as you can guess) not enough tread to be safe. (I guess he rotates every 10K miles) I have bought Firestones, Goodyears, Continental generals, Toyos, and Kellys. most of these tires are for cars not trucks. I look at it this way--Either pay for lower quality and get 30k miles, like continentals or toyos or get a quality tire like Good year. Just my 2 cents. I hated having to buy tires every 30k miles. I just put new front tires on my new 2007 Cobalt car, only 17,500 miles and the Continentals in the fronts wont hold air more then a week, no nails in them, tread is worn more then it should be. So I bought 2 Good years last Saturday 195/60/R15--$220 for both tires. Of course a truck tire (Good Year will be $220 each.) Just my 2cts.

I'm sure that some brands are better than others, but I have no idea any more of which brand is the best. I definately WOULD buy from a dealer who has been around for awhile, and fully intends to stay around for quite some time yet.

That's good. I was doing a repair at a Firestone sometime back. Been there a long time, spose it will. A lady brought in her corvette while I was there, defective tire that she'd recently purchased there. They told her had to take it to a corporate store for warranty, named like 3 of them in the general 20 mile radius. I guess it might be the same with Goodyear, and whomever else as well. From my perspective, she bought them at that Firestone store, had the big red "Firestone" bowtie sign about 70 feet or so in the air...but as it turns out, is a franchise store, and apparently franchise stores don't warranty tires. Hmm. Go figure. I'd have never guessed.
