I am a new user and am trying to help a neighbor with a problem that he needs help with. He owns a 1993 Kubota M4030 SU tractor that he purchased new, which he has cared for carefully, kept in storage when not in use and the tractor is still like new. Unfortunately, and this is bad, the engine oil drain plug became loose and fell out, went undetected for a short time, and the engine seized up and stopped. He knew he was going to be replacing or overhauling the engine. The engine is a 51 horsepower 5 cylinder 148.7 cubic inch engine that came with the tractor and has 3200 hours on the engine. When the Kubota repair shop was approached, they indicated that they could not get parts for that engine, and that he would have to order a new engine like it. They quoted a price of about $8,200 plus shipping and he agreed. Then they called him back and said they could not get that engine as they do not make them anymore and that no other engine would fit. So, he has a very nice 1993 Kubota M4030 SU tractor with no engine. Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem, or have any advice on how to proceed? I have a Kubota tractor also and am already getting nervous. Any help or advice would be deeply appreciated !

Many, many thanks for the helpful information. Going to pursue some of the leads and will post back what happens. Just doesn't seem right to have a nice, clean tractor with no engine to power it. I sure hope this isn't something that becomes commonplace some day - our throw away society. Thanks again.

To prove my point, you gave him no email to get in touch with you nor do you have your email available through this site!

Take Care,

Joe

JBMac said: (quoted from post at 20:12:52 01/07/08) Good afternoon,

I recently had to replace a motor on a RTV 900. I found an outfit that rebuilds with warranty for about $2000 less than the dealer. I had a great experience with them and have had no problems with the engine. I called him about that motor. Told me $3400-$4000 depending on how much variance there was on the crankshaft journals. Email me if you like and I"ll get you in touch with them if you are interested.

Why not just post the information here instead of having to have him email you? This is something I just dont understand! Some day in the future someone may do a search on this site and need the same information and will have to track down that information that is hidden in someone elses computer and they probably will have either a hidden email address or one that is no longer valid. This is a forum of information put it out there for all to see!
I am not picking on you but I see this all of the time when I need information and the poster that has the information is no longer available!

If that engine is like the other Jap designs..The block probably isn't hurt..In other engines the main bearings are between the crankshaft and block...On most Jap engines there is a round bearing plate [holder] that has a bolt that locates the bearing plate in the block so the plate won't spin..Not sure if the cam uses bearings[ Deere doesn't on 3 and 4 cylinder engines]..It might just need crank regrind, a rod changed and all bearings / oil pump...Pull the oil pan down and look for a burned bearing cap..Thats the culprit that locked the engine up...

Build it, run it, break it, fix it, repeat!

I'd love to fix that thing if it were in my shop.

Time to find another dealer. My dealer has always been able to get me whatever parts I needed within a day or three. I have had nothing but good luck with Kubota equipment and the price and availability of parts and service.

I appreciate the replies and suggestions. I too find it hard to believe that a reasonable aged tractor (1993) would be ready for the junkyard because there is not an engine that would fit as a replacment! He is willing to buy a new engine if he can find one. Toyota says that they are simply not available, which just scares the bejeebers out of me. Another friend of mine just purchased an 85 HP Toyota and really likes it, but now I wonder - - - . Thanks again.

+I run into that problem all the time with Kubota. If you can get the parts [$700 starters and $500 water pumps] on the small engines.20 - 40 hp, it makes what you are trying to fix not worth it. Dealers around here [3] act like they don't have time to mess with you. If you repower something with a Kubota and you don't have the machine model and serial that it came out of, they won't even sell you the parts.

My personal opinion is to find a good engine rebuild place that has a machine shop and have them quote it with wiggle room on the price for extra parts if needed.

I find what they are telling him very hard to believe. I don't think Kubota would be that stupid. I have a 1977 L245DT and my dealer tells me I can purchase a new engine or get parts for rebuilding. He did try very hard to sell me a new engine instead of parts - he probably makes more profit on the entire engine (they wanted $5,000 for the 3 cylinder engine). Your friend should do some serious research on the subject with other dealers and repair shops as well as check some Kubota websites.

As many Kubota engines used around the world I would think someone else would be able to get parts for them ? That dealer may not of wanted to get into a rebuild. There are some people on ebay selling rebuilt Kubota engines all the time maybe contact them and see what they can get.

The dealer may not be able to get parts but a good diesel rebuilding shop should be able to. Also you may find a burned or rolled tractor in a scrap yard if you're lucky.
