Out here in California we go up to about 7000 ft. elevation in the Sierras. LOTS of small lakes, lots of snow to drill thru before you hit good ice. Live bait, worms, grubs etc. Jigs don't work to well for some reason. 16" to 24" Rainbows and Browns, some Lake trout. No shantys here, acess is tough and too much snow. CalJim

I remember doing lot's of ice fishing up in Minnesota on Mile Lacs lake. My brother in law had a fish house, but this one guy out there sitting on a case of beer. The wind chill had to be way below zero. That was one hardy Finn.

Been out a few times this season. Me & my fishing buddy split the purchase of a nice portable shelter. As long as you can keep the wind off of you it's decent fishing in one of those.

5 to 6 inches of ice here, caught some stocked trout early, then have been doing well on blue gill. Have not found any crappie yet, still looking third party image

Ice fishing is not something that is done here in New Jersey. But,if it was,I don't enjoy being out in the cold enouph to try it.
