I wish I could throw mine in the trash, but it clearly states, " Your response is required by law." I was listening to a guy on the radio saying that if you fill it out it will benefit the farmer. Funny part is he didn"t say how???

Anyone know about all these benefits, or is filling it out kinda like shootin yourself in the foot?

No such thing as "census cops".

Toss it!I always do!

The government has more info about us than you may think.

If you don't receive any government handouts such as FSA direct payments, LDP's, or buy crop insurance whose premiums are subsidized by the government, then throw it in the trash. You don't owe them a thing. Otherwise do as they ask, and fill it out correctly.

I haven't filled one out in 23 years of farming. I just throw it in the trash.

Got mine for the first time. I don"t think it"s worth their time since I farm so little compared to the "big guys"

I've heard that we can at least fill it out on line this year. It's give us something constructive to do instead of agrivating each other on here.:)

couple of years ago I lost mine (wife probably threw it away) and when the next one came in I forgot about it never had any problem but now there is another one just came in the mail so with time off work I think I will make sure to do it. My mother uses the census to do family history so it is a good thing for future generations to have to look at.

I guess my question is do we all get this thing or are we just randomlly selected and what do they do with this information? I always filled it out before but I might not this time cause it doesnt sound like anybody on here went to jail for putting it in the round file. bill

How many other businesses have to fill out such detailed forms every year. Is there a "census of car dealers"? Census of undertakers?

Short version...I think you guys are nuts to just bend over and give out your personal and confidential business information.!!

If you have time to read this...here's the long version...I haven't filled one out in 20 years. Haven't opened the envelope before it hit the trash in the last 10 or so. And nobody has ever knocked on my door looking for me to fill it out...or haul me to jail.

Tell me this.... Do they still have about 15 pages of questions about your income and maybe one page about your expenses? How does that paint a true picture of the condition or needs of the American farmer?

How many acres do you own/rent? What family members have a share in your land? What do you have for buildings and what machinery or animals do you have in them? What crops do you raise? Bushels? How many calves do raise? Did you receive gov. payments of any kind? Right down to ...have your kids ever sold sweet corn off a pickup tailgate and has your Grandma ever sold a jar of preserves to the corner store? And most of all they want../..NEED a dollar sign behind every question?

Funny how they want to know all about the money you make and where you get it from but they're not real interested in what your expenses are.
Here's the real kicker. If the government did ask me in such a way to get real information, I for SURE ain't going to tell them squat. IT'S NONE OF THEIR D*MN BUSINESS!!!

Here's some more rant.
They ask more questions than your banker, your tax-preparer, your nearest neighbor or even some of your family members have the nerve to ask. Maybe that should tell you, that if those people who are closest to you and your finances know better than to stick their nose in your affairs, then what business does the government have to ask you such questions? And threaten you to do it "by law" or else. Or else what?

Next time some bureaucrat or anyone else asks you for such info, just say this... Sure, I'll tell you all about my finances, my family, my landlords and anything else you want to know as long as you answer my questions first. How much money do YOU make? Whats the value of YOUR house? How much is YOUR cabin and property worth out there at the lake? And that reminds me, you need to disclose how much you spent for that boat and jet ski. I see you have a 2 stall garage, yet a third car sits outside and another "collector" car sits in a storage unit. Whats the total value of all them toys? Speaking of toys, how much money have you got into those his n hers snowmobiles sitting on that trailer and no... I didn't forget the 5th wheel camper behind your garage. Thats just the obvious stuff you can't hide from anyone in the daylight. Lets see now... we have multiple checking accounts, savings accounts, investments, money in the stock market, retirement plans, Grandmas jewelry and silver set. Thats some of the stuff we have to look for. Now how about the stuff we don't see. Whats the dollar value of your paid vacations, paid for health insurance, dental, medical benefits, the list goes on...now lets talk about your wife and all of her income and benefits from her job.
Then lets talk about your teenager who drives a new car but doesn't have a job and looks glassy eyed all the time.

How many questions do you think he would answer before he told me it was none of my d*mn business and told me to go to heck? What does that tell you?

Just to be fair I should ask him what his expenses are... I suppose you spent a few bucks for gas money, mileage on a car, part of a cell phone bill and lunch money for those "business lunches"? Yep, that about wraps it up. And I did a good job in understanding what the 9 to 5 man is all about and now the Government can take the info I collected on him and mold tax reform around this poor bast..bugger and help him out of his lowly middle class existance with some new improved program that our grandkids will pay for.

While I'm at it... This "anonymous" information you send in that has your name and a bar code all over it, is put into a book of statistics so everyone from the kid flipping burgers to your governor can better understand the farmer and make decisions for you on your behalf when it comes to tax laws, farm programs or whatever. Just remember this...there are three kinds of lies that you get told in life. Little white lies, d*mn lies and statistics.

I'm done belly achin' now.
I shouldn't be on here late at night when I'm tired and cranky.

Cranky trashman, you summed my thoughts up to a tee. Ain't none of their damn business. The gov't can't even balance their budget, I sure don't need them helping me.

I threw mine in the trash the last 3 years. Long about the end on February, I'd get another one. They met the same fate.

I quit filling those out 10 or 12 years ago. So far they haven't came after me. They can get all the info they need from my tax returns.

the "best" part is where on the back its says that it should take 50 minutes to fill it out. spending 50 minutes on a crop and livestock farm census form wouldn't even get you SWAG figures. seems like there is one of these da** surveys about something or other every year. and they ALL take way longer than the "allotted" time to get anything useful on paper.

They are almost as bad as filling out an application for a million dollar loan..

Most of what they want to know has nothing to do with me, but i guess the rest I will have to fill out and send back...
