1990 5130 Case IH

I am looking at one of these seriously, they want $25,000 it is mfw and has a loader, it also has 9000 hours on it. I am not afraid of the motor part of the tractor, if I rebuild the engine it is no big deal, but I do not want to go from the front axle to the rear axle. I would use this tractor for haying and light tillage, If I could get 3 or 4 years out of it without a major expense I would upgrade. If any of you have any experience with these old girls I would appreciate any input.

We've got a 5140 with close to that many hours on it and it's been a very reliable tractor, a neighbor traded off a 5130 last year with close to 15,000 hours on it and I think it had less than $2,000 in repairs since new. Our dealer said they've had to rebuild a few of the powershift clutch packs and a couple of shuttle shift clutch pack shafts but otherwise they've really never been into the rear ends on them and they've got a bunch of very high hour Maxxums they service.

It's got 9000 documented, honest hours and they want 25 grand???
It better come with a lot of work already done for that kind of money. Anything around here that spun 9000 hours was pretty well worn out. I don't care what color it is. At that age they cost money, and they can cost at any time at all.
I think I'd keep shopping...
Not saying it's a bad tractor at all, but that's a bunch of hours.

if i remember the 5130 has a normally aspirated Cummins B block six cylinder motor, it's as strong as an ox, 9000hrs should be a problem as long as it has been well maintained. I used a 5150 in the early nineties and still have a 5240 today (it's a 1997 model), we only ever had one problem with a 5150 evolving the tranny, and that was due to the engine pumping out over 175hp at the PTO shaft, after 5000 hrs of hard work, mainly plowing/heavy cultivation and pulling a potato harvester. The main shaft in the 4speed transmission failed locking the machine solid, we needed a crane to get it out of the field! Other than that they've been good tractors, I've never heard of problems with the smaller models outside of the usual leaking oil seals on the front axle planetary drives, check to make sure there are no signs of baler twine between the hub and king pin assembly - that's the usual cause of the problem, ours need replacing every two or three years, it's not a big job, but it gets to be a pain in the behind if you have to do it regularly. On the front axle planetary also check to see if the cover plate and or wheel nuts have come lose. The pate is held on by two of the wheel studs (they have a collar on the stud) and two countersunk allen head bolts, they do on occasion come lose and spray gear oil everywhere on the wheel - that will damage bearings quickly if it's run without oil for very long. If the tractor is a powershift then make sure the oil is clean and the filter is changed regularly otherwise we've had no more problems with ours. I've never operated on of these with no powershift so i can't comment on the regular syncro transmission, but I've not heard of problems. They are a good range of tractors, usually very reliable. oj in manitoba
