What is the best gasoline golf cart. My wife had foot surgery and has trouble walking now so I want to get a used golf car for her to drive at tractor shows which she really enjoys. I am kind of leaning towards the yamaha. Also if anyone close to Kansas has a good one for sale, let me know.

Avoid ParCar. It took 4 months to get a cylinder and piston for my 2 cycle.

My dad worked for the largest golf car dealer in Canada and third largest in N. America. $3,000,000 worth a year for Yamaha. They originally sold Yamaha and still do. Then they added EZ-GO. Yamaha sold the most by a pretty big margin. EZ-GO had 2 cylinder engines if I remember right. The mechanic said the Yamaha was a better cart. A former mechanic there went to work for a place that buys older golf carts and reconditions them. He worked on all makes including Club Car. Yamaha and Club Car are the top 2 brands of golf cars. He also said Yamaha is a better cart and easier to work on. The Club Cars may have been 2 cylinder as well. I can't remember. One of the big disadvantages of a Club Car is the Aluminum frame. If it ever needs repairing, it has to be sent to a specialty shop to get done. I don't know how much you want to spend, but would suggest buying from an established dealer. Where my dad worked they got lots of trade ins and sold a fairly large rental fleet every year. The newer carts came with a warrantee. They had a trade in once that my dad was going to buy. I wish he would of. It was a Cushman golf cart with an 18 HP engine. The same as used in the Cushman utility vehicles used on most golf courses. The drawback was it only had 1 speed and not a 3-on-tree like the utility vehicle. The really neat part was that it looked like a 57 Chevy. Hope this helps. Dave

An electric cart will give about 90 minutes of actual run time on a full charge. That is peddle time. Here is ours - used daily - charged weekly.

This might be one of those situations with no perfect solution. When at shows I absolutely hate dodging the dozens of golf carts driven by people who 99% of the time just need to get off their fat *sses and walk. Look at how many shows and events ban any sort of atv, golf cart etc. There is the 1% of cases where a golf cart is legit and we have all seen and agree with their usage. There are numerous versions of those small electric car/vehicles/wheel chairs that are not as threatening and dangerous in crowds. Some appear robust and equipped with decent tires. Will your wife recover usage of her ankle? With my broken leg this year I just used crutches.

I have a 1995 Yamaha G14 gas single cylinder n I wouldnt trade it for nuttin. Its starts n runs sooooo oo smooth n quiet n even and can crawlllll l very slow as compared to many EZ Go Ive driven that seem to have to wind up so fast n tight before they take off lol. Even my 84 yo mother has nooooo problem using it (hard to get it back lol) Id opt for a Club Car as my second choice. I will admit, however, if you lookin for parts or after market accessories (like from Buggies Unlimited) EZ Go n Club Car are easier to buy for. Id never have another 2 cycle, I prefer a 4, nor would I want an elec n the batteries run down when Im far from home

i have a 2001 yamaha cart, single cylinder gas. got it from a golf cart shop, has a hardtop. they also put a kit on the back that has a bench seat that flips over and becomes a little flat bed like a pickup truck. real handy, mother in law uses it all the time, loves it for gardening at the farm. has headlites and tail and brake lites on it. no lift kit, but it has knobby rear tires. suprising how good that thing is off road and it can climb up some pretty steep hills.

They're all good, but you can put more hours on a 4 cycle. The 2 cycles aren't designed for extended point-to-point driving, and I've burned up quite a few motors in two of them.

If you're buying a cart for tractor shows, get a 4 passenger model. You'll need it.

For around home, bolt on a receiver hitch and you'll double the unit's utility. A cart will easily tow a ton on a flat surface, and hitch weight isn't as big an issue as with an ATV. I think a trailer hitch you can see easily from the driver's seat makes more sense than a clumsy box hanging off the back.

Best buy in a cart? A 3 year-old, any brand, for around half the new price. It should be good for a lot of years of service.

BTW: At a plowing match in our neighbourhood this fall the organizers cited liability issues and banned golf carts, ATVs and horses from the site proper, though the motor pool had a couple of dozen carts and ATVs used as taxis by volunteers. Be sure to get a handicapped sticker for the front of your cart and talk nice to the people on the gate.

Don't know that there is much difference on brand. I bought my mother a late 2cycle 3 wheel for a town celebration this last summer. She got along with it OK and I had to replace the spark plug once but we made sure to get a couple extra's when we bought the cart. I paid $500 at a dealer for it as a bare bones machine. She was happy and later asked us to add a canopy?!?! which Dad happily did.

We have had a old electric on the farm which it has replaced.

As to traction and off roading. They won't do what a 4wheeler or UTV will do but used judicously with one modification they will take you alot of places.

I also have a Cushman TurfTruckster which would have been used as a golf course or grounds maintenance vehicle originally. I changed the rear tires for ag style bar tread and get along pretty good. It gets it's test at the local threshing show where I am one of the fix-it people during the show. The thing is loaded with parts and tools. Only problem I have had is when the front wheel gets balled up with sticky mud out in the field and pinches between the yoke and tire.

If you are looking at long term use, buy a used 4cyc 4wheel and put ag tires on the back. will probably cost about $1500 to $2500.

4 cycles will give less engine troubles.

The 3 wheel type have some real stability problems. My TurfTruckster (which is a 3 wheeler) isn't so bad cause it is sprung a LOT stiffer and the weight is lower to the ground and the rear axle is wider and the engine doesn't have enough poop to get me in trouble.

You have already steered yourself away from electric which is good. They may work fine on a course and I know they will work for minor farm use. But they won't cut it for daylong use fighting mud.

When you get one just remember that you won't be able to use it to get to all the places that you can walk and be judicis in you use.

Other means. in reply to tractorhank, 12-28-2007 19:56:11
Many I know in my area are getting away from the golf carts cause of the cost of them and limations using them. For no more then you can do with them. Many have now going to one of them 4 -wheels. Buying them used and using them for hunting and etc. They get around better and go about any place you want.

hank,

I have a Yamaha G1, which is the old old 2 stroke engine. Never had a bit of problems with it. It has seen some major use. Stock for a long time then a 3" lift, then last year a 6" lift. Its my poors man Gator.

Honestly all golf carts out there seem to last if taken care of. Use to be at a drag strip every other weekend and never any major problems. Just people running out of gas or not charging the batteries.

Yamaha, EZ-GO, Club Car all seem good from my experience, just your choice. And whether you want gas or electric.

Heres mine before adjusting the camber on the new lift kit.

Rick
