Went and saw my brother in law yesterday . He is fixing to buy a soda blasting outfit . This is a big outfit with the compresser on a trailer . He showed me a video on it and it was taking the paint off of cars , fiberglass boats , etc. without any glass or body trim harm and claimed it did`nt get into bearings and other noks and cranys like sand do`es and dont tend to warp sheetmetal like sand . has anyone had any expereance with it and is it as good as they say or more snake oil and a good salesman ??

soda blasting is a great process. it removes paint without warping panels. it is not as aggressive as sandblasting, it does not remove heavy rust. also, the blasting media is plain old baking soda, so there are no real enviornmental issues to deal with as silica sand type media. it also does a good job cleaning buildings from graffitti or removing loose paint to repaint a building/house. he should be able to make a good profit with a portable blasting service.

I have had 2 pickup trucks soda blasted. It does an excellent job of removing paint, primer and most body filler. It does not hurt rubber hoses,or glass unless you hold it in one position for an extended period of time.It will not remove heavy rust,it will not clean greasy metal. The parts you need cleaned must be free of heavy grease accumulations. The severly rusted areas will have to be sanded down afterwards as it does not cut rust.If you have older, deteriorating fiberglass it will cut down to the glass fibres. But as you said it does not warp the metal as sandblasting would, plus if it gets into anything it is not abrasive,so excessive bagging and taping is not needed.
