Thought I would share this. On 2 occasions, I have left ice cream buckets in the shop with about half full of water. The mice seem to be thirsty and smell the water. They fall in to get a drink and can't get back out. Got 2 of the buggers this morning. Think I will put out some more buckets and lure them out.
Can't get more invironmentally frienly than that... Gene

I use the bucket but I use a piece of wire across the top with a piece of toast with peanut butter, or frosted shredded wheat with maple syrup. I use a board for the ramp.

I use window washer fluid in the winter to keep it liquid so they don't get out. I got 19 in one night when I was up elk hunting. Ron

I've heard of guys using anti-freeze in their home made traps like that and it's supposed to kill the stench if they've been there for a while.

Can't say it works or not, just what I've heard.

On a similar note, I put 55 gal drums without a lid in the grapefruit grove and fill them about half way with water. Grab a few fruit that fell on the ground and is rotting and toss them in for bait. Place a couple of blocks next to the drum for a ladder, next morning I have a minimum of one possum per drum and sometimes 3 or 4. Use a fish net to dip them out and dispose of them, toss in a few more fruit and your ready for the next night. Never have caught a rat in them yet, I guess it's to tall for them to get into....or maybe they don't like ruby red grapefruit?

We found that if you used a 5 galon bucket, filled with water, and a little bit of feed (cracked corn, or sweet mix) sprinkled in worked well. We alsoi made a little ramp out of chicken wire for them to help themselves with and it worked great. Only problem is during summer they tend to stink, and feed will ferment pretty fast.

Have a place i go to in upper maine and the cabin always used to have a problem with mice while we were away. It's taken a while to come up with them but these seem to work well. Old cooking oil bottle with 1/2-3/4 inch still in it left buried up to the top in the wood pile is always good for a few and then all you do is screw the top back on and toss it. The other wonder is a 4 inch section of PVC about three feet long. Smear some peanut butter down a few inches from the top with a spoon. Stand the pipe vertically in an old coffee ( liquid in the bottom if you like) can next to a counter or firewood pile that the mice like. They never actually get to the peanut butter so rebaiting in not a problem and the little buggers just keep jumping in. When we get back up there, just lift the pipe out and put it in a new can, cap the old one and toss. Work great as we just are not there enough to check regular mouse traps, although sometimes the place requires some ventilation if it's been awhile.

Yup,we had a rat problem one time. They would be floating in the water pails in the calf pens almost daily. Seems like I read one time about somebody that made something along that line where they used a small board with bait on the end over the water. The mouse or rat would go out after it,the board tipped down, rodent fell in the water and the board tipped back up.

Done that for years. A word of warning for those who enjoy having a hen with chicks running free around the place in the spring. Empty those buckets before the eggs hatch. I keep mine where small livestock cannot get to them.

P.S, PETA complains if you kill a fly.

I leave a broom with the handle resting on the toilet when I leave the Cabin. Just flush when I get back a few weeks latter.
