What is involved with bringing a non-running tractor across the border from Canada? Any advice would help.

I bought a 5 hp hit & miss engine in Canada about 2 years ago. Hauled it in my pickup. Went thru the gate coming back to the US and the customs guy did'nt know what it was. Told him it was a gas engine. He asked if it ran. I said no. He made a short phone call and said have a nice day. I hope it stays that simple for others!

NO DIRT on the equipment. U. S. goods returned is no duty. Call the port of entry you will us before you start the trip. Very early AM entry is good. A broker is more than happy to take your money for u.s. goods returned. Just don't be too talkive and answer the question asked. They enjoy long hairs at the boarder.

You will need a Passport from the United States to return to this country if you self haul the Tractor. It is not an open Border with our north or south neighbors any more. We used to fly to the Bahamas for little Vacations with no problems going or coming but now we need a Passport to reenter the United States.

Ah, You're right,"Maybe" and I can't argue that the person has about 12 days to get the job done'But" according to the "Western Hemishere Travel Initiative" on Jan.3I,2008 he will need to either present a WHTI Compliant Document or a Government issued Photo ID such as a Drivers License, and proof of Citizenship such as a Birth Certificate. Summer 2008 at a date to be determined[when DHS is able to handle the rush of people trying to aquire a Passport] The Dept's. of DHS and DOS will implement the full requirements of the Land and Sea Phase of WHTI.Don't you just love the Gov'ts use of short abbreviations? Any way seems to me just as simple to get a Passport as go thru this Rigamarole. NAFTA created this open Border Scenario and now it has come full circle to close the Borders and create a Bureaucratic nightmare for the public and a Passport "NOW" eases the movement from the United States to our neighbors North and South. Arizona is one of the states proposing an "Enhanced Drivers License" but the Notion has not been assigned to a committee yet much less accepted into law.Arizona is in the middle of the "Employer Sanctions Lawsuits" stage at present and the past showing of the Legislature and Courts deem that this will take several years to be hashed out before they can even consider such a license.Such is small States Politics. So,am I wrong? Maybe, are you right? Maybe. We will see if we live that long. In the mean time I would get a Passport. You will need one if you want to spend an enjoyable week at Paradise Island ,Bahamas. It is a great place to go.

When I brought one from Ont.to MI about 5 years ago through Port Huron I made no pervious arrangements and had only a bill of sale. My biggest problem was convincing customs I was a collector and would not be farming with it. It took a while, but I was able to talk my way through and it cost me nothing. Proof of employment would have been helpful. My employer ID made the difference. If? I ever try it again, I will call first and ask a ton of questions. Don't know what I would have done if they wouldn't have let me in.

Blackhole,

I've had just the OPPOSITE experience.

There's no duty on FARM EQUIPMENT, so NO PROBLEM.

Calling it a COLLECTOR'S ITEM could raise ALL SORTS of "issues", depending upon who's on duty at the port, and what mood they're in!

Unless someone has definite information to the contrary, I'd be REAL leary about STRESSING the fact it's a collector's item, rather than simply a farm tractor!

The process is quite straight forward and is done daily by equipment dealers and jockies. Have all the paperwork required(get a customs broker to handle this) and the machine will have to be thoroughly washed as it will not be allowed entry if it has soil, crop debris or other organic material on it. New rules require that U.S, customs requires a mininum of 2 hrs notice before arriving at port of entry(again, your customs broker can guide you through the process). The easiest way is to arrange shipment through one of the equipment jockies who do this on a daily basis.

If it's not running, you will probably be required to place it on a trailer, before bringing it into the United States. I'm quessing.

Just a little humor

But, since the US is south of Canada, and if the wheels turn, couldn't you just coast downhill into the US?

No, Have you ever wondered why the Nile flows north? If you put Mexican tags on the tractor and stick a few spanish bumper stickers on it, I don't think anyone will even stop to ask for id. You need to remember the password for crossing the border, as well. Just say, "No Hablo Ingle". It must translate to, "I have right away to enter America."

I did it a few years back so I don't know how it's done now. At that time I had a map that had the phone numbers of the different port of entries on it. I called the one where we were going to bring it in and they said to have a bill of sale for it. If it was originally made in the USA there was no duties on it. When I took it acroors the border, the guy at the gate called me in to talk to me. I thought oh-oh. He wanted to talk tractors with me. Told me where there was some nice collections along the way and told me which roads to take to make the trip easier. Then he checked the serial number on the bill of sale with the number on the tractor and said we were good to go.

Ask ahead of time at the US side of the border crossing you intend to use.

No matter WHAT the written rules are, they will be "interpreted" by those guys, so you might as well find out ahead of time what "their' rules are.

That's the way it is.A couple of years ago I attempted to bring a tractor from Michigan into Ontario through Port Huron/Sarnia. I was told they needed three working days to process the paperwork and they needed the title and registration for the tractor. They seemed to think it same rules as automobile importation applied.
