My brother has a 1976 Massey Ferguson Chinook snowmobile and we were wondering if anyone new what the oil/gas ratio is supposed to be?

Thanks

With a good oil, 20-1 will be too much. Don't mix standard and synthetic oil. Some synthetics can run up to 100-1 but most people will run them about 50-1. Optimal is a very good non synthetic oil and I run it at 50-1 in a racing two stroke moto-cross bike. Many others do as well. I have run Castrol 2 stroke oil before at about 40-1. I have run my bike in a few six hour ice races and never had an oil related failure. Oils have gotten a lot better since the 70's. Dave

1976 masseys were made by Scorpion. The Massey Chinook 300 with the Cuyuna 294 CC engine wants a fuel oil mix of 20:1. From the service manual: Use regular gasoline and a two stroke motor oil meeting Mil. Spec. 2104-A (Massey Ferguson 841-614-M1 or equivalent. The Scorpion Lil' Whip which is the equivalent Massey snowmobile says 20:1 using premium gasoline and an approved branded snowmobile oil. It also says, however, that lead-free fuel should not be used.

I believe that the oil that you use, should be mixed according to IT'S recommended ratio and not by what the machine manufacturer states. After all, they do not know what oil you are using.

I would use a high quality name-brand oil that says 50 to 1, but then mix it at 32 to 1. Tom

Older stuff likes 20:1... I leaned one out a bit and seized a main bearing... not fun to repair.

I have a Chinook amongst my collection of Massey Fergusons, I need to get it going one of these days. As far as the mix for those older machines, a quart of snowmobile oil in 5 gallons..if it smokes a lot you can cut back on the oil, but I'd rather have it smoking than running dry and seizing up

Excess oil can cause detonation which will ruin an engine faster than insufficient lubrication. The extra oil tend to lean the mixture which causes higher temps and increases the tendency to detonate. Oil also has a very low octane rating compared to gasoline. So the extra oil also causes detonation due to it's chemical properties. Damage from detonation and insufficient oil can look similar. Scored cylinder walls and ruined rings can either be lube or detonation problems. Broken rings, ruined ring lands, signs of excessive heat are caused by detonation. Another reason to run premium fuel in your two stroke engine.

you lost me, could you explain what too much oil does to the cylinder temps. I can see the higher ratio of oil leaning the fuel mixture, but wouldnt the extra oil not burn as well as gas effectively lowering the combustion temps (Detonation aside)? Thanks, Bill M.

Still stuck with the detonation problems of the lube oil's low octane. Detonation subjects the engine's components to elevated heat and pressure levels it was not designed to under.

On a sled that old when they came from the factory they recommended 20:1 gas/oil. That is a bit thick for the modern oils that are out there. Unless you plan on racing it you can get away with 40:1 just fine.
Anymore with the modern oils you can get away with a lot less oil than you used to. The last motocross bike I had was a Yamaha YZ250 and I ran Belray H1R synthetic at 100:1 and never had one burn down.
