I have a 60 hrs diesel ,Long tractor 4 cyl. It is very cold outside.. say low 30's and been snowing. I have no place for tractor to set inside. So I have a tarp over it is all. Wondering if I will be able to start it tomorrow after being out all night. Will the fuel jell and if so? What can I do so it will be ok when I want to use it.

Never heard of adding gas...Add kerosene and like others have said, use a block heater,a tank type(uses hoses and circulates) or a magnetic heater. Make sure you have gd battery with high cold cranking amps,The more the better.

THANKS to all who have posted. Went and got some of that Power Service. Added it and my tractor turned over a bit slow but then hit and run fine. Let it run and warm up good. Then even took it out and cleaned some snow off my drive way. Can't say I did a great job "LOL" But I am new and still learning how this tractor and loader work. :) I have found on the right side of tractor and near the dash. A round hole like. The size of a quarter. It has a cover over it and slides sideways to see inside of it. Looks like two male prongs in there. Have no idea what this might before? Its a 610 Long deisel 4 cyls. Anyone know?

Give her a snort of either.Either's not as strong as it used to be.Manufacturers have diluted it somehow so motors don't hammer on it like they used to.Start with a half second shot, give her a little more while cranking till she fires.
Make sure the batteries are up,you want her to spin good.Mark

Larry,

The glow plug warms the air in the intake manifold. Another trick is to take a heat gun, the type that blows hot air, and warm up the intake manifold. Also you could take the front grill off the tractor and aim the heat gun into the air intake to get warm air into the engine. You may have to take the oil cup off the bottom of the air breather and get hot air directly onto the intake. Be careful and don't catch any oil drop or trash on fire. BTW the air intake being in front of the radiator with the fan behind it gets a lot of dirt sucked into it and you may need to take the air filter assembly off and clean it throughly. wait for a warm day though. ALSO, DO NOT clean the steel mesh filter out with gasoline and immediately put it back on the tractor and crank the tractor. The gas fumes will be a supply of unregulated fuel and the engine will rev up too fast. Blow out the filter and let it sit overnight before using, whatever kind of oil or gas you use to clean it.

I was desperate to crank mine one time and I warmed up new cans of oil and changed the oil. It cranked fine, turned out the factory new battery was bad.

Can't help you on manual and know nothing about 4 WD models. You can probably order a manual online.

Having trouble for some reason on getting a 610 long with front drive also. Found single drives but not with front. I will tell you. That front axle center hub is big, real big around. A friend of mine came by to look at tractor and said that was the biggest hub he ever seen. LOL But like today. Had snow last night. So after putting in Power Service in tank and warming it up good. I hoped on that old tractor and went all over. Now you have to picture where I live. The gravel road to my place is not maintained by county. Its kind of private own by another person. So off this highway you start up a 45 degree hill and its a ways to the top. Then I live 7/10s of a mile back in woods. So snow comes an snow stays unless I clear off myself. Like I said, was fun. but a bit cold too! lol

If you don't have a block heater get one if not able to there are what they call tank heaters that go in the block drain and up higher so the convection currents can circulate the coolant. Or if your only going to be at 30 degrees above zero farenheit then don't worry about it. If you really want to do something depnding on how much fuel you are treating there are many products out there to dope it and of course the old truck driver thing is put some gasoline in to the tanks about 5 gallon to the 200-250 gallon of fuel.

The temps last night got down to 12 degrees here. Sun is shinning this morning for the first time in week are so. Do have a glow plug on tractor. Wanted to stick a water heater plug in on it. But the radiator sets to close for one to be add. Very short lower hose. Would it help to put a light by the filter area of desiel for a bit? Are is that like waisting time cause of other fuel areas in cold? Been gas I know to use heat in fuel. But I know nothing about diesel fuel motors. There is some good news this morning. Sure glad to see some Sun this day in a long time. :)

I'll make two additions to all of this fine advice; first during cold weather always add P0WER SERVICE fuel system treatment according to mfg's. instructions If you live in a cold climate; second if you don't have a block heater installed, you can get a real handy magnetic oil pan heater that will do the trick given some time.

He's right . You absolutely have to add Powerservice when you fuel it if you are going to be starting it in Cold weather . Otherwise you got Jello-but it doesn't taste like Jello.Never had one jell up yet after treatment. I think it also extends the life of the fuel.

I get away with running #2 diesel down to 20° or even 10° overnight if i wait til it warms up a little. Just plug it in for a while if you have a block heater on it. I have a Leyland that will start right up at 30° without being heated but my other diesels have to be warmed up at anything below 40° If you think it is "very cold" at 30° I doubt you need blended "winter" fuel which will be 40% or so #1 diesel. If you are worried dump in a quart or 2 of kerosene. That's mostly whats in the anti-gell stuff.

30C or 30F? Plug in the block heater and add some fuel anti gell.

I will address your question. As the previous poster said, how cold? IF it is -30F the fuel will likely have gelled(unless appropriate fuel has ben used), in which case the waxes will very quickly block the filter. It may be able to start once but not to run. 30 dgrees F (about -1 degrees international scale of temperature[Celsius])or 272 Kelvin {universal[?] scientific scale of temperature}) is cold for the UK but not very cold in some parts of the globe. Normal diesel fuel (34s Redwood) would be perfectly alright at this temp but you would not be using gas oil fraction at -30F. The fuel will need to be warmed quite a lot above the gelling/waxing temperature, if it has suffered that fate, as the waxes do not re-dissolve so easily. Adding more volatile fuels in minimum proportions to re-absorb the waxes followed by dilution with normal fuel would suffice or simply change the fuel and warm off-tractor for later use would be OK. Really depends on your situation. Not many diesels can produce enough heat of compression at very low temperatures to be able to start without some extra assistance - glow plugs, cold start heaters, volatile solvent sprays, heating of combustion chamber.

Hope this helps.
Regards, RAB

When you say low 30's, do you mean -30's or just 30's. If it's -30's, is cold. 30's isn't cold at all. Most places that get colder weather sell seasonally adjusted diesel. I don't know if your tractor has glow plugs or not, or even what engine it has. Best bet is to plug it in if you can. Some engines can use starting fluid but it has to be used very sparingly. Some engines can't use starting fluid ever. -30's forget it unless it's plugged in for a while. You could get a propane heater to warm it up. It will need to turn over as fast as possible. You might want to take some booster cables. Dave
