Please, my scale has been "borrowed", just like my hip waders I havent seen for 4 years, and I need to make sure I am giving my dairy steers enough feed, they have been consuming hay like crazy. I am guessing they are between250#-350#. Aproximatly how much would a 5 gallon pail of grower weigh?? Feed bag recommends 1# PER DAY PER HUNDERED WEIGHT OR 1 # PER day per month of age up to 5 lb's a day. I dont want to over feed them grower, but definatly do not want to short them. Fathter in law says to let em eat all the grower mixed with cracked corn they want. If I do that I am worried they'll get all plugged up or just Shat it all out rather than growing from the extra.

5 pounds to the gallon is a good figure to remember.

I used grain feed when I first started out then switched to alfalfa and found its as good or better than the feeds and cost less. I give them all the grass hay they can eat and they also run the pasture and eat all morning on the green grass. My cows do just fine on this and my calves look real nice with just a small amount of marbling and little or no fat on the outside but they are Limousin and known for having very little fat.

Dave, I used to figure three pails per hundred pounds for ground feed ,but that depends on the fullness of the pail and the contents of the feed. Is the grower cracked corn and pellets by chance?. Jim

Nothing wrong with a cup of rye in the morning, although I prefer bourbon.

Don't listen to him when it comes to free choice corn! You can build them up to it,but if you just dump it in and let 'em have at it you'll kill them. It's called acidocis.(not sure about the spelling there) Voice of experience here. There's no cure for it. All you can do is watch them start foaming at the mouth and die.Acid displaces the oxygen in their blood and it's like suffocating.

Keep filling up the bucket and pouring it into another bag until the first bag is empty. Then divide the total weight of the bag by how many buckets you got out of it the number willbe how many lbs per bucket full

IIRC, each 5 gallons is about 5/8 BUSHEL.

Do you know what the feed weighs per bushel?

GUESSING 40 - 50 lbs., each pail of feed would be 5/8 / 40 or 50 = 25 to 31.25 lbs.

Of course, you could always sneak out the bathroom scale, and find out!

I broke that weighing pails of rye this fall, wife is still looking for it, She'll find one under the tree this year. I guess I can borrow her little weight watchers serving scale and weigh what vegetable can full weighs.

Oh man, I'd be planted 6 feet under on the 28th of December if I gave my wife a scale for Christmas! (And she's not a "big" gal either)

You are a brave man giving your wife a bathroom scale for Christmas.

"Honey, I want something that will go from 0-200 in less than 5 seconds."

I gave her a bathroom scale.

The funeral is Tuesday.

Seriously, I gave my sis a scale decades ago. she was looking for one. It was a name brand, gooder quality. It weighed 7 lbs heavy, & had no adjustment - because it was such good quality I guess.

I still don't have that lived down.

A five gallon bucket of feed will weigh approximately 30 pounds +or- 2 pounds.(Depends upon the fineness of grind and/or pelleted. Normal feeding recommendations (for grain)say to feed 1 lb/hundred pounds of body weight, so you should be feeding them around 2.5-3.5 pounds per head per day. Calves will consume roughly 2.5-3% of their body weight per day of total ration (including hay). Your calves will eat a total then of around 7.5 pounds of total dry matter per day. Most people tend to over-feed grain. Let your roughage work for you..... .feed it free choice and go sparingly on the grain. You'll be dollars ahead.
